Nope. I've professed my geek-love for blackberries more than a few times here before.
Other than the Storm 1 and 2, the BBs are awesome phones. Loved the Curves. Bolds are hella nice. Perls are... well... they're good too, but I don't really consider them BBs, more like BB-branded consumer phones I guess. Even still, they're a hell of a lot better than some of the other consumer phones out there.
("Consumer" phone might not be the right word. I'm talking about the non-smartphones, and I can't really remember the normal word for them right now.)

Yeah, it's probably not fair to say they aren't BBs. They definitely are. My ex got one when they first came out, and it did everything my Curve was able to do.
It's just... very small. Actually, "cuter" probably is more apt.

"Feature phones" is the current euphemism for dumb phones. Which actually makes sense, because my previous phone was an LG Voyager, and it could do 80% of what a smart phone can do, despite being a "dumb phone." The data plans were a lot cheaper too, but Verizon has caught onto that and now charges the same $30 for unlimited data on a feature phone that it does for smart phones.
I think in the next few years almost everyone will have smart phones.

Well, by getting the BB, the nice thing is I can swap back and forth between my iPhone 3G if I want to, so I'll be fine. Looking forward to the change for a while.
Looks like there are some really cool themes out there too.

Pearls, to me, seem like... a more girly BB. Or for whoever doesn't want a really wide one like all the other BBs. I like the Curve. I pined after the lavender and then the dark purple one for a while until I decided to hold out for an iPhone instead. =P

Before seeing this thread, today I clicked the update button in iTunes to bring my iPhone 3g from os 3.whatever to 4.0. Had I read up on the net and here I wouldn't have tried.
I've now rebooted both my desktop and my phone several times, I keep getting a frozen progress bar that appears 3/4 of the way through the upgrade process. My phone has been trying to update for about 8 hours now. From internet searches this is a common problem updating the iPhone 3G.
Apple sucks.
Edit: Have read more reports on difficulties upgrading to 4.0... wow, apparently I have to give the iPhone 3g 12 hours in the upgrade loop before rebooting because it might take that long...
Apple really sucks.
Edit 2: I found the problem... it was related to a program I installed for my iPad... once I deleted the iPad related program, my iPhone restored properly.... wow... Apple really needs to spend some time figuring out how its devices change Windows 7....

Death Grip hysteria may end Monday with iOS 4.01
A variety of people have demonstrated identical problems with other phones, from the Android based Nexus One to the iPhone 3GS. Yesterday, my wry tweet, "Blocking iPhone 4 antenna kills reception. Blocking mic kills audio, and covering the screen makes it impossible to see Retina Display" made it to the front page of Twitter and was retweeted more than a hundred times by people following the hullabaloo.
However, the fact that problems observed in the iPhone 3GS are much more pronounced when the device is upgraded to iOS 4 indicate that there is also a software issue involved in the matter. iPhone 4 users can't downgrade to earlier versions of the core software, making it impossible to compare its relative performance.
Readers report that Apple's tech support forums originally confirmed that a iOS 4.0.1 software fix addressing the issue would ship early next week (as early as Monday), before the comments were subsequently taken down along with all the other related discussion about the matter.

I don't know how reliable any of this is, but I guess we'll see.

Quick BB question to anybody in the know. Blackberry has its own messenger program ... am I correct in assuming ONLY BB's can use this and there is no way a single iphone user among a group of BB us seers can join in the chatting?
I ask because my sister in law was complaining about her iphone and that was perhaps the first truly strong argument not related to something you can just get used to. All her colleagues and friends are BB power users and nobody chats on anything but BB messenger. Her iPhone keeps her out of the loop.

I'm pretty sure that is correct Russic. You need a BB to use BB Messenger. Not available anywhere else because it is not email and not SMS. It uses the PIN numbers of each phone to communicate over the BB network. It is one of the reasons for my switch. My wife and step daughter both have BB's and talk that way all the time. I was out of the loop with my iPhone where that is concerned as well.

That's a good point. BBM is a killer feature. I searched Google and found this: http://www.whatsapp.com/
Maybe somebody can test it and see if it works?

But, one important thing to keep in mind:
Quote:
To send and receive messages, WhatsApp utilizes your existing smartphone internet data plan: 3G/EDGE (or Wi-Fi when available)
|
With BBM, there is no cost or usage charges at all. You can use it between BB's and send images, etc. at not additional cost.

Bbm uses your data. The difference is Rogers and what not offer blackberry messenger packs for email, And bbm instead of a full data package.

I have heard a rumor that RIM is releasing an official BBM client for the iPhone. No idea if that is correct or not - it seems unlikely to me, but maybe RIM sees it as important that BB users be able to reach out to iPhone users, rather than trying the walled garden approach.

Not sure I understand your answer. BBM is a free service for BB's. Regardless of how often you use it, there are never charges for going over on a data plan, etc. It is a free BB to BB service.
Of course, that is unless I've been misinformed.
Edit: It appears that the sales rep I was talking to did misinform me. My apologies. It appears you are correct. There are data charges that apply along with the BMM service. Damn. Oh well, guess it was too good to be true to be free right?

Why would they do that? BBM is one of the things the BB has over the iPhone.

Read my post - because they might just realize that the walled garden approach will fail once the mobile market place reaches a tipping point where iPhones and Android devices outnumber BB’s, and most communication between devices shifts to another messaging protocol. At that point, BB users will begin to feel increasingly isolated and are likely to look for alternatives, either on their BB’s, or by switching to alternate devices. Either way, the brand takes a value hit.
You could also build on the idea that BBM is a superior platform from a reliability and security standpoint, and sell the app to iPhone users as a valuable social/business tool. How many iPhone users would pay $4.99 for BBM? Probably quite a few. Beejive is $10, and is probably the most popular IM client on the phone right now. Multiple that by several million devices, and its not hard to see a revenue stream.
Ultimately, RIM should probably be focusing their value proposition on being the best, most reliable, and most secure messaging platform for the mobile space. Hardware is a losing game at this point, and its going to get much worse as cheap Android devices continue to proliferate.
