And that would be totally the England way of doing things. Could have a nice ride to the semis but, no, let's do it this way instead.

No, if both games are draws Germany makes it through on GD.

Totally agree. And to contrast, look at the quality in the top bracket if Germany wins. Something like Korea, USA, Serbia and Uruguay and one of them will be in the semis. Who would have called it?

Yeah, but England probably is sitting top of the table if David James started from day 1.

Yup. They were in the easier half of the draw by far if chalk held but they messed it up and now must travel further, playing earlier in the day and be in the tougher section.

ya I weirdly feel better about their chances of progressing with a harder side of the bracket, they 99% of the time play to the level of their competition whether its Brazil or Algeria

just no penalties please...

Perhaps the first German miss in 325092 (or 36) years in a World Cup is a sign of things to come...

Big game for the US. Soccer has gone to a new level in the US. Even Jim Rome is talking about it.

I typically don't back the US, mostly because it results in having to hear the most annoying crap from people all around town, but the reaction here in NYC was pretty cool, and definitely good for the game. I saw a guy who was quite clearly not a typical soccer fan emphatically describing the goal to a bunch of people on the street, and people I know don't give a damn about soccer are talking about it and actually learning about it. If they'd have gone out it probably would have been met with endless complaints about the refs (lead by Alexi Lalas, who may be the biggest whiner I've ever seen on TV) so I'm glad it hasn't come to that.

It's amazing how one moment can change an entire viewpoint of a sport that's not very popular.

I have some huge stomach cramps going on. I don't know if it's because I'm nervous or the gall stones.

Algeria had to press for a goal. If that game ends in a draw they were both going home. It made for one of the most offesnively exciting finishes I've seen in a game.
