It's a lot like the board game Risk if you've ever played that. I don't play video games anymore except this one.

Well then I am in luck because I dominate in Risk as well.

Let the games begin!

Does a game in Civilization take 4 days to play like a game in Risk does?

I'm trying to win Civ IV on Noble level for the first time, it's tough. But I am getting close.

Some words of wisdom. Know who the aggressive civilisations are, like the Greeks and the Aztecs. The frickin Aztecs. In the game I am playing now the Aztecs have declared war on me about four times already. I beat them back, get a peace treaty with some reparations and 20 turns later Montezuma declares war on me again for no good reason. He's not even my neighbour, he's miles away. So yeah civilizations like that will be a pain all game long so take them out if you can or else try to pay off other civilizations to go to war with them and take them out.

I am also learning that before attacking a city get a few siege units loaded up with collateral damage bonuses to soften up the defenders first. Your catapults or cannons will get destroyed but the collateral damage is worth it and will save your attackers. Then build some more siege units before moving on to the next city.

Also the bigger your civilization the less likely you are to lead in technology advances (and, hence, build wonders) at the Noble level. Maintenance costs cut into your research funding so there is a middle ground of an ideal city count. Trying to figure out what that number is right now.

You can play an easy game with 3 or 4 opponents in a few hours if you want. On harder skill levels (where you have to think 10, 20, 30 turns ahead) a game can easily take a weekend.

Beating the game on Diety (the hardest) against a handful of random opponents on a large map will likely take you several vacation days and about half a notepad worth of paper.

I find a Noble or Prince level game against 4 or 5 random opponents is a great way to spend a cold rainy day inside.

At least they're not holding in-game goodies as hostages like other game developers and their collector editions...

I picked that up for $35 I believe, by pure luck when Best Buy was getting rid of them.

Good thing I can.

I've informed my wife that September 21st is the day I pretty much forget about basic hygiene.

Love the tongue-in-cheek civilopedia entry.
