Why don't they just call it CiVilization?
I asked the same question when Civ4 came out.. CIVilization.
Or the surefire sequel, CiVIlization.

They could REALLY go out on a limb and plan for CiVIlIzation.
And then can you imagine the one after that? CiVIlIzatIon.
Unfortunately, that'd be the end of it. :P

Does anyone know what the 18 playable civilizations will be?
I tried seaching, but couldn't find anything.
Personally, I wish they would just use ancient or pre-BC civilations or cultures. It never sat well with me that you could have relatively modern civilizations and nation states at 3000 BC.

ok so i finally decided to give the Civilization series a try for the first time by picking up IV. now i'm at the point where the Chieftain difficulty is way too easy, yet if i bump it up to Warlord or Noble i get my ass kicked. the AI seems to pump out way more military units than i can and i always get war declared on me by someone which stunts my civilization growth. what tricks are there to playing this game where it's a challenge, but not so hard that you have to micromanage every last detail?

I think the only real answer is multiplayer online but....
The only other way you can lower the difficulty on Warlord or Noble is to pick less civilizations to play against. Less war enemies means less of the other civs taking advantage of your weakness during war.
Or else you have to get really really good.

traditionally its never good to play on chieftain because you get such obscene bonuses compared to the computer that you learn bad gameplay habits. i know on civ3 (i still play it after nearly 10 years) on chieftain level, the computer takes twice as long to produce things. advice on how to do better? keep playing. i started playing civ when it came out on snes in the mid 90s. i still learn new strategies to this day. i am sure it can be frustrating, but just try different things. sometimes being warlike has advantages and sometimes it doesnt. i am a builder by nature and try to get as large an empire going as i can early on. if i have over aggressive neighbors, it can be super tough.

I too just picked up Civ IV. Not really enjoying it that much, seem to spend a lot of my time just agonizing over what tile improvements to build.

I'm hoping that they fix the unit balance that made the game unrealistic.
I did give up on Civ 4 after I advanced myself to the modern age, had advanced tanks and bombers and went to invade the country next to me who were still in the Iron age and lost half of my modern mechanized forces to dudes with swords and arrows.
Meanwhile my battle group at sea which featured a carrier destroyers and cruisers was routed by Iron sides.
If they don't fix that then there's no point in playing 5.

The harder the level, the slower you have to expand and more defensive you have to build
Any race that has less cities than you will see you as a threat and declare war.

Its already fixed since there is no more unit stacking. It wont be tank vs 50 archers, it will be tank v 1 archer

If you're playing on an easy level, just automate your workers. Don't worry about tile improvements. It's only when you get to mid difficulties that you need to worry about maximizing tile improvements.

Playing on Nobel, you need to have an army at all times. It's not an option.
Also you need to learn which cities need what buildings.
Your cities don't need all the buildings in the game. In fact, most cities probably don't need half the buildings.
Make specialized cities like science cities. You would build libraries, universities etc. and have science specialists in these cities.
Production cities with factories and the like to build military units and wonders.
Early in the game you need to build military units. I always used to overlook it because I wanted to build every building in my cities, but when i had to go to war, i would always lose.
Attack and attack often. Build an army early on, take over your neighbour. It's pretty easy early on, you just need 6 or 8 warriors, and hope that they don't have an archer. If they do, there's no point in attacking.
If you can take over a civ early, it will set you up in a better position later on in the game.
Browse some of the fan forums. Civ Fanatics is a good one. There are tutorials on there.

Noble is the level where you and the computer are even. Anythign above that and the computer starts to get crazy building bonuses.
If you are unable to finish on warlord my guess is that you are not developing your individual cities enough . In order, to keep production up you need to develop quickly and stay up to date on science.
I was playing on the world scenario with 18 civilizations. I can barely beat this one on Prince, but anything more is impossible. The guys will come at you from multiple angles each one with crazy building advantages. When they get a technology advantage they share it among themselves but often refuse to trade with me.....arghh.
I can beat Civ2 on diety but this is tough.

I found that the biggest mistake I would keep making early on was not paying enough attention to opponent relationships. It might not seem fair that they ask you to share your techs, but with a -1 hit if you refuse and a +1 hit if you oblige, it really is worthwhile. If some civilizations look strong early, do whatever it takes to stay on their good side until you can challenge them.

Never played a Civ before in my life but on the advice of a friend I am going to pick this up when it comes out.
Might try out Civ IV before then to get somme skills.. I am an RTS god though so I am not overly worried. I will dominate in this game from day one I imagine.

I dribble a little bit of pee every time I think about Civilization V -- when I actually play it, I'll likely shat my pants.
That tells you all you need to know about how much I love the Civilization series.
