The tax for being Mormon is 10% of salary. Doesn't take too long with that amount of money to get projects like this built.
I grew up knowing a lot of mormons, they're generally very good people. My only beef really is their aggressive anti-gay lobbying that they do. They were largely responsible for getting Proposition 8 passed in California.
As for the temple, even though Calgary's a really secular city, I don't mind seeing these large religious buildings going up. The crazier ones like this add something unique to the city's landscape.

I know a lot of people were using this as a last straw to try keep Rocky Ridge Road from closing (Think of the children with all the mormons driving around!).
It seems tucked in a distant residential neighbourhood is kind of a dumb place. If it's going to be cool to look at it's too bad they couldn't have gotten a nice parcel on a ridge near downtown or something.

I think it looks amazing. I would prefer that over another Walmart.

I am disappointed they didn't/couldn't use their Crescent Heights location.
That would have been stunning.

Isn't the largest Mosque in North America near YYC? Vaguely recall it opening in the last year or two, with the PM at the ceremony

I'm starting to think that opening a store nearby specializing in white, short-sleeved dress shirts would be a slam dunk.

Half of the comments were bashing Mormons generally, and had nothing to do with the article.
The other half were pointing out the numerous grammar errors that made the article look like it was written and/or proofread by a six year old. The errors have since been corrected (I think).
P.S. This is the San Diego temple, which can be seen as you drive down I-5: http://www.gbwells.net/San-Diego-15-Small.jpg

If those people are to scale, it doesn't look very big at all.

Now, seeing exactly where it is, I question the choice of location. With Rocky Ridge Road being closed to Crowchild, vehicle access is going to be cumbersome at best. A person will basically have to drive South through the whole Royal Oak community, from Country Hills, to get to it.
I can see why some residents of the community could be upset by that increased traffic. The article says it will serve 20,000 Mormons...

Actually, the one in Cardston is quite a bit larger. The Cardston Temple is 81,700 square feet (7590 square metres) and occupies an 8 acre site. The Herald article lists the size of the Calgary Temple as 270 square metres, which I think has got to be a misprint. Most Mormon Temples built in the past 15 years measure between 11,000 and 20,000 square feet, (990-1800 square metres) so I would imagine that the Calgary one will be somewhere in that range.

The article says it's big enough to house a few hundred people, so yeah it's not that big.
I don't think they meant that all 20,000 in the area would attend at the same time.

Yeah, I didn't realize that the Calgary temple would be so small.
Strange.

Calgary is listed at ~29,000 sq ft. The one in Edmonton is only ~11,000 sq ft.
Calgary FTW

I've never had a problem with Mormons. Not sure where all the bigotry / dislike comes from?
I used to work for a guy who was Mormon.... for 12 years. A more honest guy you won't find.. always treated me fairly.. Very family oriented. Sent both his kids to university.
The only time he ever brought up the Mormon faith to me was when I quit to go to another job.... as a going away gift he gave me the "Book".... that was it... no preaching.. no nothing.
I hope he enjoys his new temple. Looks good.
