Too bad it still costs and arm and a leg to park there. I'll continue to park in the Sears parking lots.

Just for more space... and something about a Mayo-type clinic
This is what it looks like. I think it looks a lot nicer in this photo than in real life. It to me looks like it will be dated very fast.

I haven't seen the new SAIT parkade in person, but from the photos I see, I'm impressed. I tend to like to reserve judgement until seeing it in person, however, as photos can be deceptive.
I don't like the cloud features on the parkade... looks to cheezy. I would have just set the aluminum paneling in such a way that reflects light and shape in a more natural form. IMO, this would have made the structure seem more 'classy', if you will.
That's about my only greivance with the structure. Aside from that, the soccer field on top, and the respect for viewpoints it attempts, appears to have some solid architectural thought behind it.

I ride past it every day on the train but didn't realize they have a soccer field on top until I visited the campus last week. Very cool looking. I really like the heart building as well (they built the new building but kept one giant wall of the old building still standing).

That whole building is still standing. They just attached the Heart building (the new one) to it. The atrium inside the Heart buildings shows off the south side (former exterior wall) of the heritage building quite nicely.

MRU doesn't need to put green space on top of theirs as they have more space than SAIT but yeah, I gotta agree, dressing up the sides of it like SAIT has done would look a lot better than just the huge chunk of cement it's going to be.
|
Any images of the design of these new buildings kicking around? I am alum from the conservatory - just curious.
SAIT's doing some excellent stuff - the Parkade entrance structures are quite impressive too. I do wish that they had used Bing Thom Architects (who did the master plan and the parkade) instead of Gibbs Gage though.
See, great design in our city is well worth it.

A long way to go for 16th still though...

It would be great to see SAIT build more ON 16th avenue to create a bit more of a lively urban corridor. A good idea would be to build residence buildings or rental buildings with ground floor retail, with shops, restaurants and bars - engage the city a bit more than an insular campus does.

I still cannot understand why the uni is putting up another residence. They've taken away the only parking lot for rez kids, and they couldn't even fill up rez last year. It's mind boggling. Also, the building is ugly as hell.

We just re-designed our website and have some pretty awesome pictures of the parkade:

Lots of time and effort put into that screen - we have tonnes of mock-ups in the office.

I got to play a half dozen games there this season and I still can't believe they spent all that money on that beautiful field and didn't buy floodlights.

It may look nice but the parkade is kinda crap. For one thing it's not heated. If i'm paying $125/month and you are building a new parkade thats into a side of a hill where 70% of it is partially underground already shouldn't you have made it heated? Also there are no plugins in it!??
Also they build it on 10th street hill. You better have salt or sand as soon as the ice hits. I was stuck there on a Friday nite till 730pm during that ice storm because cars were stuck left and right. I was ok with my nokians but it was a disaster.
