All of the songs I posted are either songs that introduced me to bands that went on to become one of my favourites (Points of Authority, Is Anybody Home, Load Me Up) or songs I just absolutely love and find engaging (Broken, Stricken).
There are a few others songs I should mention as well:
Eagles - Hotel California
Leonard Cohen - Famous Blue Raincoat
Garth Brooks - The Change
Garth Brooks - Friends In Low Places

When many people really really like something, it tends to become mainstream. But yeah, post your own, please.
EDIT: and on that note, I'll post a few tracks of my own. These are not necessarily what I'd consider "the bestest stuff evar!", but stuff that has really opened up horizons for me.
This is pretty much how I got into the modern folk scene:
Hedningarna is indeed very good stuff. That's more along the lines of the type of stuff I listen to. Garmarna is interesting too, but Hedningarna especially. I have four of their albums ... Heathen's Fire I particularly enjoy, which I think is the album Min Skog comes from.
I won't bore the majority with YouTubes of stuff I find interesting ... if anyone's interested John Butler, Jerry Douglas, Edger Meyer, Manu Chao, Frank Vignola, Kongar-ol Ondar, Doc Watson, Rory Gallagher, Ronnie Earl, Gov't Mule, Derek Trucks Band, Mike Bloomfield, Patty Griffin, Ten Years After, Donna Konsorado ... those are a few. I think they're all on YouTube. Probably not Konsorado.

It never fails to surprise me how out of step I am with the herd when it comes to music. There's a few good songs posted here, but nothing I would consider mind blowing. For the most part it's just the same old pop culture mish-mash that usually gets trotted out. I guess I should learn to just stay away.
Every song means something different to someone else. Where one song might be amazing and heartfelt to one person, another person might just dismiss it and call it crap. I'm pretty sure the majority of the songs posted in this thread mean something to the people who posted them. I know the ones I posted all move me in one way or another.
It could be something as simple as what was playing on the radio at the stage in your life or if you were having a rough patch and a song helped you get through it or seemed to have you in mind when it was written and recorded. That's what music is my friend.

Yeah I know. I realize I'm the one who doesn't get it.

The original name of the album is "Trä", which is the name it's sold under in the Nordic countries, but yeah, that's "Heathen's Fire" for you non-nordics.
If you're into Garmarna and Hedningarna, you should also check out Gjallarhorn, a Finnish band (if you don't know it already of course). Heavily influenced by the two previous bands, sings both in Finnish and Swedish (they're Swedish speking Finns). They're a little too "world music" at times for me, but especially the first two albums, Ranarop and Sjofn, are highly recommended. (This one's the opening track of Sjofn.)
EDIT: Oh hey, check out Gåte also, from Norway. Only made two albums, but good stuff, even if it is quite a step closer to basic rock. CHeck out "Du som er ung" or "Snåle mi jente" for example.

I'm not sure what's not to get. More often than not the songs that touch people don't do so because they are technically precise or fundamentally perfect. Hell, look at Neil Young. In addition to a legend, the man is a walking flat note.

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.

Over the years it's been Stone Temple Pilots, Silverchair (90s), and Matt Good Band that have stood out as some of the best music collectively for me. Here is a couple of other singles.
The first one that came to mind was Perfection or Vanity by Dimmu Borgir. I'm not a big fan, but at the time and in my... ummm... state of mind during that first listen, this song made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
Eulogy by Tool gets me every time. When the chorus comes in, it hits you right in the chest.
A couple songs by Emperor really got me...
The Wanderer
Curse You All Men!
Mahavishnu Orchestra - Miles Beyond
As far as songs that "blew me away" in a "wtf are they doing?" fashion...
Sleep Terror - Autoerotic Spy (My Sharona riffage in tech death metal?)
Morbid Angel - Immortal Rites (actually Alters of Madness blew my mind when I first heard it in junior high. Hard to believe this album is 20 years old.)
Strapping Young Lad - All Hail the New Flesh (first song I head by SYL, still blows my mind to this day, as does most all of Devin Townsend's work...)
Devin Townsend's Ocean Machine album. Here are a couple of my favorites...
