This song I last listened to on Jan 30 1999 at my girlfriends funeral, she was killed by a drunk driver who was 3x the legal limit. He was also under age and got little to no time in jail, but after 11 years I still cannot listen to it, the song is about the Smashing Pumpkins touring keyboard player Jonathan Melvoin, who overdosed on heroin and died in 1996
Possibly the single most moving thing I have ever heard.
Really? I love McKennitt, and "Mask & Mirror" is one of my favorite albums, but I gave Dante's Prayer only 3 stars. I really love "Full Circle" and "Cé Hé Mise le Ulaingt?".

I think OilKiller and I have much the same taste in music. Cowboy Junkies, Tori Amos, Kate Bush... and Gary Jules's "Mad World" has to be one of the best cover songs I have EVER heard. "Tears for Fears" original just pales in comparison.

I have a couple of John Mellencamp's albums, but I wouldn't consider myself a huge fan in that if someone asked me to name my top 10 artists, he wouldn't make the cut. But after hearing the acoustic version of Pink Houses, that might change.
Another from my ultimate songs playlist:

Oooh... that reminds me of one that still brings back memories of road trips to the Interior in the old man's '68 Mercury Cougar. My favourite Elvis song. He'd get annoyed with me replaying it over and over again on the 8-track.

I thought a lot about Is Anybody Home as a teen. I love that song.
Is Anybody Home is the song that introduced me to Our Lady Peace. They are still one of my favourite bands and I will be seeing them in May when they come through Calgary.
Is Anybody Home is still a song that I love and has had a big impact on me.
The video is also very well done and has an impact all its own.
The other mentionable for me in terms of OLP is One Man Army which is probably my 2nd favourite OLP song.

It never fails to surprise me how out of step I am with the herd when it comes to music. There's a few good songs posted here, but nothing I would consider mind blowing. For the most part it's just the same old pop culture mish-mash that usually gets trotted out. I guess I should learn to just stay away.

I was actually surprised at the amount of songs in this thread that aren't mainstream.

Or post some of your own...

When many people really really like something, it tends to become mainstream. But yeah, post your own, please.
EDIT: and on that note, I'll post a few tracks of my own. These are not necessarily what I'd consider "the bestest stuff evar!", but stuff that has really opened up horizons for me.
Songs that are definitely in this category but I couldn't find a link to:
Vicente Amigo: "De Blanco y Oro" (you can google it for a propably illegal free download)
Lightnin' Hopkins: "California Mudslide"
ABBA: "Voulez-Vous". I know, I know, you can find this trivially on the internet, but if you don't listen to it at hi-fi quality, propably as a recent remaster, you're really not hearing how absolutely brilliant this is. The peak of pop-production!
CMX: "Nainen tanssii tangoa" Punk-metal and traditional tango united. Totally blew me away 16 years ago.
This is "Min Skog" by the Swedish band Hedningarna pretty much how I got into the modern folk scene.
When I first heard this I totally cracked up; still one of the most ridiculous metal tracks. Love it. Really pushed me forward on my journey to metal.
This is another essential metal track for me. Effin rocks.
Actually I wanted to put the song "Requiem" here, also a Serge Gainsbourg cover by Mick Harvey, but this is marvelous stuff too.
One of my all-time favourite "F U!!!" songs Dumb and simple.
This movie was a mind-blowing experience at a point in my life.
Really no special reason. Just hit me.
I think I loved this album about 30 seconds into it.
Another artist that tons of bands have tried to copy, unsuccesfully. I love how the lyrics are just complete dada A classic, of course.
In 1994 this was hot stuff. The song is "Mad Boy" by Waltari, a Finnish band. Still not bad.
A Tom Waits song sung by Crystal Gayle (from the album "One from the Heart") (dorky video, sorry)
"kick back, dig, while we do it to you in your eardrums"
My most recent love is Meshell Ndegeocellos album "Peace Beyond Passion". Fantastic from one end to the other. This is just the one track that first caught my ear. (Yeah, I know it's a cover.)
I guess that's enough flood from me at this point
