A lot of the free products, like Avast and Dr Web do not allow use in settings you are describing, but there are some that do. I think MS Security Essentials is one of these.
I use Security Essentials at home, and I just tested a full scan amd it seems to take about 200 Megs of RAM, even though it came up as an Internet Explorer process (iexplore.exe). I am actually not very happy with those numbers, especially on my wife's machine which only has a Gig of RAM. Passively it takes up 2 mb

I've been running Kaspersky with everything enabled, for the last week or so. I've noticed no slow down in performance, and there hasn't been a single annoying message all this time.
Just checked the resources, and it's currently using 16MB of ram. That's with everything turned on.

Yep, Kaspersky is solid. For paid AV's, that's what I would go with and what I am personally running.

I 3rd the use of CC cleaner. A great, free tool that is simple to run and really helps your computer run smoother.

Oilkiller, what's your take on having more than one anti-virus or anti-malware on your system? Most places tell you not to do it as they will conflict with each other. I currently have Malwarebytes, Ad-Aware and Avast and it seems okay, although Ad-Aware and Avast both take an active role.

Some are meant to work alongside others, like Malwarebytes for example. Your setup is fine, although I don't know that much about Ad-Aware. Have you checked their forums to see if it can run alongside something like Avast? I am assuming you are running Malwarebytes on demand and not the Pro version in realtime mode?

I know adaware and malware bytes are designed to be run in conjunction with anti-virus programs, but I am not sure how they work together. Since you are running the free version of Malware Bytes (it seems at least) there is probably no problems whatsoever. Given the choice between purchasing Malware Bytes and Adaware, or both,I would probably just go with MBAM.

Yep, agreed. MBAM is a great product. I purchased the Pro version simply because it catches things that Kaspersky and Avast do not when running alongside. Layered protection is best IMO.

If you do, it prompts you to back it up, so always do it. I have never had a problem stem from it though, and I run it on every machine I do anything on at work.

Yeah, you're right, deploying in a school or corporate environement will be violating the terms of the free agreements for the home versions of Avast and Dr. Web.
Avast is eating up between 30-40MB of memory when idling in my task bar but it is working hard at intercepting stuff before it gets to me. It's been catching malicious code on regular webpages that were seemingly innocuous to me.

It's been almost two weeks since I last checked, and Kaspersky is still only using 16MB of RAM, with every setting and background task enabled. First time I've ever been impressed with an anti-virus app.

The anti virus is much lighter than the full Internet Security, so be careful. I personally am not a fan of the full IS as it seems pretty heavy on the system to me.

One would think so. The whole suite is just heavy IMO. I guess you could disable the rest, or just buy the AV.

Yeah the Anti-Virus one is all you need. It has other stuff with it besides AV (which is good), but the IS suite is too much.
