Some baseball randomness:
1. Manny Says This will be His Last Season with the Dodgers
http://tsn.ca/mlb/story/?id=311145
Speaking with reporters upon his arrival at spring training, Ramirez hinted at the possibilities of either retiring or becoming a designated hitter in the American League after 2010, but didn't confirm either option.
2. David Ortiz says the People Gave up on Him Last Year
http://tsn.ca/mlb/story/?id=311142
Boston's designated hitter reported to spring training Monday and said people gave up on him after his terrible start in 2009.
He described his struggles as a "nightmare" that persisted even when he was awake.

Manny is a bum. The guy is one of the greater bats in the game, but is a sloth and a continuous poop disturber. If it's his last season in the NL, tell management. Why does the guy continuously leak info or do anything, then sit back and stay quiet while letting the controversy grow? Sure he's a great bat, but the guy is a real bum, no doubt in my mind.

Damon can still be very productive as a hitter. Just doesn't have the arm to play the outfield for the New York Yankees. Bombers gave up some big bats this off season. But Matsui and Damon both can't be DHing every game obviously. Especially with Posada not being able to catch every day.

Granderson is a huge upgrade on Damon defensively. He should hit for good power in Yankee stadium, but the Yankees will miss Damons ability to work the count behind Damon at the top of their line up. Who else do the Yankees have set to play in the outfield this year besides Granderson, Gardner, and Swisher?

Hideki Matsui went 1/2 this afternoon in his spring debut with the Angels. He strike out on his first at bat against Chris Young then bouncing a single up the middle against Radhames Liz in his second at-bat.
Quote:
After leaving the game, Matsui worked out for awhile then met with the media — the handful of American reporters first, the much larger group of 30 or more Japanese reporters next. He handles the constant media attention with ease.
“It’s just part of being a professional baseball player,” Matsui said through his interpreter. “That’s the way I was taught.”
As our interview session with Matsui wound down, I asked him what the Japanese reporters might ask him that we hadn’t thought of.
“Maybe what color my underwear is,” he said with deadpan humor that translated well.
So, not wanting to be scooped, I asked — what color was it today? Matsui played out the joke, pulling the waistline of his pants out slightly and peering down.
But it turns out, he wasn’t totally joking.
One of the Japanese reporters told me that Matsui had worn red underwear in the Yankee clubhouse once. Another reporter spotted this and it became part of the story he filed that day.

WEIRD rumour making its way around right now in the world of baseball...
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/s...r_espn_4994845
It's the sort of thing that is much more likely to happen in fantasy baseball than in real life, but according to sources, an idea has been kicked around the Phillies' organization internally, with discussions about proposing a swap of slugger Ryan Howard for St. Louis superstar Albert Pujols.
It's not fully clear whether the Phillies actually have approached the Cardinals with the idea, and even if St. Louis were to seriously consider such an offer, executives with the Cardinals would have to swallow very hard before dealing Pujols, a player widely regarded as the best in the sport.
...
The talk may well echo, in the end, another blockbuster deal that was discussed but never consummated many years ago: Executives of the Red Sox and Yankees once famously discussed a trade of Ted Williams for Joe DiMaggio.

Seems like a pretty useless rumour.
Of course the Phillies want to trade Howard for Pujols. Every team would want to make a trade for a much better player. Why would the Cardinals even think of making this move at all.
I don't need "experts" to tell me that teams want to make deals in which they make out like bandits.

Boston Red Sox minor league outfielder Ryan Westmoreland will undergo brain surgery after being diagnosed with a cavernous malformation.
The Red Sox announced Saturday night that the 19-year-old Westmoreland, one of the team's top prospects, has taken medical leave from minor league camp to seek treatment.
A cavernous malformation of cavernoma is a cluster of abnormal or dilated blood vessels that effects the central nervous system. Symptoms can include bleeding in the brain, seizures and headaches.

Big loss for the Twins.
Quote:
Minnesota Twins closer Joe Nathan will miss the 2010 season because of an elbow injury that will require surgery.

Quote:
Nathan hopes to have surgery to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow within two weeks. He was injured on March 6 during a 20-pitch outing in a spring training game against the Boston Red Sox.

The 35-year-old right-hander went 2-2 with a 2.10 ERA and a career-best 47 saves last season.

Man, I'd have thought Mauer would have taken a so-called "hometown discount" to stay with the team. Crazy expensive deal for the guy though. Probably worth it now, but the term is huge and it is the Twins, so it is a huge discrepency for their overall team payroll structure.
Nathan's loss is massive for the Twins. IMO, probably the best closer in baseball goes down. Hopefully he returns better than ever next year, though that's doubtful considering surgery is rarely something that works out great for pitchers.

Jack Cust is very complementary towards the A's in regards to not making the ball club.
http://www.sportingnews.com/mlb/arti...ion-let-him-go
"I think it's messed up," Cust told the San Francisco Chronicle after getting the news. "They're going to go on 50 at-bats after three years of what I've done here? It's ridiculous. A lot of other guys have had bad springs. This is a joke.
"The fact is, this team has no power and they've just released a guy who (averaged 28 homers) the last three years. That's amazing."

I was very surprised when the cut Cust the other day. However, the team isn't going anywhere so they might as well finally get some of guys they have had bounce back and forth from AAA the past couple of years finally play. Not to mention, he must have almost 600 strikeouts in those 3 years as well.

Cust's OPS numbers have been trending down pretty significantly in the last three years from .912 to .851 to .771. It does seem that pitchers have a book on him now and that they've been able to get him out pretty easily. Although his salary isn't that bad, and there are teams who could use the power he provides in one form or another so I would think someone would have some interest in him.
