Question regarding grinders: I uses a French press to make my coffee and drink it black. Any specific grinders anyone would recommend? or are all created equal.
Saw the recommendation from Hoj regarding a burr grinder, but anything else to look for beyond that?
Do not try coffee at Phil and Sebastians in Marda loop or Caffe Artigiano (not quite as good). All these other coffees will be ruined since you now know what it is supposed to taste like. You will feel like you've been duped all these years with that vomit you've been drinking.
The tastes are so divergent that they really shouldn't be called coffee. Its like a good beer vs malt liquor.
Where is this place? I drive through Marda Loop 10 times a day and have never seen it.
Just finished a great 1 cream 2 sugar from Timmy Ho's.
Starbucks I get either Gingerbread Latte, Pumpkin Spice Latte or White Chocolate Mocha depending on whats available (in that order)
Wow reading this thread has really educated me about coffee, which is fantastic, because I love it. Right now I just drink Nabob Gourmet medium roast , I would buy better coffee and use a grinder but for a student like me it's just a luxury I can't afford. Once I have more disposable income I might have to reread this thread.
I find Bumpy's to be the best coffee/espresso in Calgary.
When I was a student I had a grinder, but we didn't use it for coffee.
On the go: Starbucks Verona coffee with a little bit of cream.
At Home : Starbucks Verona coffee ground. Get a pound and try it! Highly recommended.
Coming from a person who worked there and has tasted every possible type of coffee...mild, medium, bold, extra bold.... Verona is the way to go!
Gold Coast at Starbucks isn`t too bad, I find it rather caustic...but you can go Verona, Kenya, Ethiopia or French Roast. All are very good, and very much worth the money spent on them! These are the coffees that last me all day. I drink them hot and even after they are cooled off completely I can still just drink it cold, so refreshing and amazing!

Burr grinders are more expensive, but the consistency they provide is unmatched by a wing grinder. If you are only using it for french press, you can probably get away with a less expensive one. When I was doing research about getting a home espresso machine, there was overwhelming advice that if you have a budget of $1000 or less you should be spending at least half of this on the grinder. This is an expensive proposition, but the path to excellence is never easy.

Have you tried beans from anywhere other than Starbucks? I'm guessing you wouldn't be touting their beans as highly as you are if you have.

I was always a "typical" coffee drinker in Calgary, never one for lattes and such, but down here the coffee culture is a bit of a mixture of styles. These flat whites (basically a latte but served in a normal take-away sized cup or mug) are a thing of beauty. Otherwise it's just whatever fresh ground stuff I can get for my plunger.
In Calgary i went from Second Cup to Timmys to Starbucks to the roadside Diner stuff (which has its own charms).
I don't know any crazy coffee house bean place and I'm not anal enough about my coffee to buy it fresh or anything like that. Although, that star bucks stuff is meh to me now. But going from Nabobs to Starbucks was an eye opener.
I switched recently to starbucks to those gourmet coffee manual pull down things and I think it tastes much better. Star bucks has this heavy flavor that I don't enjoy that much. I just bought a bag of kicking horse coffee (3 sisters) and I love this way more than anything I've tried. It's light, got flavor and packs a punch.
When I go down to Calgary I'll be sure to try out those gourmet coffee shops. And perhaps invest in a burr blender or whatever those are.
Does the type of coffee maker really make a difference for a normal coffee?
