Tims while I'm out or Nabob at home. I like coffee, but I can't really tell the difference in gourmet or non-gourmet beans. We got a starbucks gift basket for Christmas and I would rather brew up the Nabob stuff in the cupboard than either of the "gourmet" coffees we got in the basket.
Also, the darker the better. I'd rather drink 1 cup of super strong coffee than 3 cups of regular.

I like to buy Kicking Horse or Big Mountain beans for home. Big Mountain is roasted here in Calgary apparently - I really like their Peru coffee

I always purchase whole beans and grind them at home, everything from Good Earth Medium roast to the Superstore light and medium roasted beans. Depends where I am and if I'm about to run out of beans.
Lighter coffee has more caffeine than darker roasts.
Good coffee doesn't require heavy cream and sugar.
Black is my coffee of choice 100%.

The tastes are so divergent that they really shouldn't be called coffee. Its like a good beer vs malt liquor.

I just can't resist admitting I don't even know how to make a cup of coffee, either for myself or anyone else.
Mrs. Cowperson on the other hand . . . . . seems to prefer Nabob.

Always buy the beans. Way better than pre-ground.
Kicking horse (one of my favourite roasters): Espresso, grizzly, kick ass
Starbucks: Espresso, anniversary blend
Cochrane coffee traders has some good stuff as well.
I've still got a 1/2 pound of beans from the Dominican. That stuff is unlike anything else I've had. Fantastic.
also, if you like flavoured beans, Costco sells a really good vanilla hazelnut. Folgers has a nice vanilla biscotti too.

If you drink coffee without cream and sugar in it (the way it was meant to be drank) then you will be able to tell the difference between between the cheap stuff and better stuff.
However, if a coffee bean has been roasted, it's stale within a couple of days, meaning basically all the fresh ground coffee you enjoy is stale.

I will piggy back on this thread with another question:
What are you tips to brewing the perfect (strong) cup of coffee. I struggle with consistency at home. I would really like to be able to brew a solid pot of coffee all the time.
How often do you clean your coffee maker? What do you use? CLR, vinegar, soapy water? My parent are Brits so I can make a MEAN cup of tea but coffee is not my forte.

I'm a big fan of Starbucks to brew at home.
Their house blend is good my usual choice, really like the Christmas blend, but of course only available at holiday time.

That's part of the problem. Using a coffee maker. The water isn't in contact with the grounds long enough to draw out the full flavour. Sort of like only having the tea bags in the water for 20-30 seconds.
The way I do it is I put a pot of water on the stove, let it boil, put 5 scoops of coffee in a one of those cylinder things (can't remember the name of it off the top of my head) and fill it with the water and let it sit in the grounds for 5 minutes or so, then pour through a filter and you're done.

Tim's double double. I know Tim's is akin to drinking a cup of burnt a** but for some reason I can't wake up in he morning without it.

For my Tim Horton's brewer-I use Costco Columbian blend-it's much better than Folgers et al out there-I do have a French press, but always battle with the amount and consistency of grounds I put in

For me I use about 2 large table spoon of coffee beans and then grind it up. I've noticed that filtered water tastes a bit better than tap... but am generally too lazy to.
A clean coffee maker... hmmm once every half year maybe? I dump alot of water and a little bit of vinegar and then just use straight up water to get rid of the sour taste.
Or you can use a Bodum/French Press. Dump some ground coffee beans and some hot water. Usually I think this is the preferred method? for a strong cup of coffee but the clean up for me is a pain.

My roommates all used to be drinking this Nabob/Maxwell stuff. In fact, they bought this mega can from Costco so we can all share. I tried it and it was almost like drinking soap water.
One day they started tried my stuff and they could not go back. Even the guy that puts 3 creams and sugars in his coffee. The taste is that different. But... it is a lot more expensive

McDonalds- cheaper, better tasting than Tim's, plus the line is usually way shorter.
