The story is probably very simple, the normal science fiction type story.
I think that Jacob and his Nemesis are two ancient people or even forgotten 'gods' or some supernatural or extraterrestrial beings or even ghosts granted power by the island who became entwined with human civilization (remember there are temples and broken statues on the island) and they waging an argument over many millennia over whether or not humans have good in them or whether or not they will eventually destroy themselves. That's why the whole mathematical formula for showing the date when humanity will destroy themselves and why Dharma was trying to change the formula are so important.
Jacob's Nemesis could not directly harm Jacob for one of the usual science fiction cliche reasons that he is bound by some rules or is actually physically incapable of doing it himself.
The island for thousands of years has been an experiment, drawing people to it to fight out this argument. Jacob and his Nemesis are able to go out into the world to find suitable candidates for this at early points in their lives and set their destinies. Remember the show's concept was to be fictional version of reality gameshow like Survivor crossed with Lord of the Flies. The island is playing a reality game that resets and repeats itself in history like Zion in the Matrix. In the end, the people will be able to stop the game for good somehow and prove Jacob right.

The guys who wrote it already said that the season finale would be the orangutan Joop in an armchair giving us all the answers. Seriously. I would love if they actually did it.

Just a reminder that Lost returns tonight.
Only 8 hours and 25 minutes away. But who's counting?!

I'm trying the unthinkable: watching this season without actually seeing anything beyond the 3rd episode of season 3. Missing one episode of lost creates a bit of a head-scratcher ... missing nearly 3 full seasons is intense. I sat down with my wife who explained the whole thing, then we watched the "catch-up" special the other night. I think I'm generally ready to go.
I was watching this on the train each morning but I just found it to be too much to keep up with. It felt like more work than enjoyment. Once I found out there was time travel I abandoned ship. My wife likes the show though, so we need something to watch.

I've watched the last three episodes of last season in order to be ready for tonight. Still confused as ever, but at least I have a better understanding after not having seen anything for months.

There are good recaps on ctv.ca.
There are 5 min season recaps for 1-5.
And there is a longer narrated recap episode of everything.

I came out of that with way more quesions than I had originally, but I suppose that's the Lost way. I liked it, excited for next week.

I think it's cool that we got to see how things end up for all of them if the crash didn't happen, but if it never happened, why is there an alternate reality in which it did happen. Cool episode, but I'm still 'lost'.

Just a thought
Could Jacob be like Aslyn from the Chronicles of Narnia? Ben stabbed him, and he never fought back, he just leaned over and died. Perhaps it means that through one of the "rules of the island" it means Jacob can return.
Perhaps through Syhid?

So, last year they introduced time travel. This year they have introduced alternate/paralel realities. We get to see what happens to the passengers of the Oceanic flight through the flash sideways. The temple is a gateway to another alternate universe where the Japanese guy and his crew live. I think that Richard is from this reality and went to the lost reality to observe for the Japanese guy. The guy living on Lockes body/smoke monster was at one time trapped in jacob's cabin when it was encircled in ash but someone broke the ash circle and he escaped. When he was out, he began to set his plan in motion to kill Jacob by using Christian Shepards body to talk to Ben and Locke.
The smoke monster/Locke is trying to get back to the Japanese guys reality to rule an enslave the people there. I am guessing that Jacob and Locke/smoke monster did battle in the Japanese guys reality but where sent to the lost reality where they could no longer fight each other but at least Jacob was able to keep Locke / smoke monster from doing any harm.

Crash and Bang Winger
|
They were already there when buddy didn't hit the button and that caused their plane to crash. So, from the very beginning they were already tangled in time travel? Any insight on that?
Juliette said that "it worked", and Miles heard Syaid say something after he died. Clearly something going on there. I wonder if they all have to die on the island so that they can all get back to their "off the island" lives.
Sounds like Syaid has been taken over by someone if he was actually dead.
They said they were going to answer two big questions in the first episode. I'm thinking that one is about John being dead and alive = was taken over by the nemisis / monster. But what was the other question answered?

Not the one...

This was the first episode of Lost I've ever watched (and I didn't read any wikipedia articles to explain it - other than this thread) seems like they use way too many plot-moving crutches.
Long hair tells three different people that he's gonna kill the doctor and no one says "come on, you don't need to murder him" until hours later when another character had died and he changed his mind?
I'm all for suspension of disbelief for whatever crazy explanation they have, but I can't suspend disbelief for basic human interaction.

So what you're saying is you've never seen an episode and therefore know nothing about these characters, their backgrounds or the relationships they've built with the people they interact with, but you feel that you can adequately judge their motivations for saying or doing things? Great analysis, why don't we try this.

You're basing your opinion of a show off 2 episodes? I don't know man, I'm all for judging books by their covers but that's pretty intense.
