Really? I see a lot of people questioning the trade, but crying? Getting fleeced?
If he read the initial reaction, he would be right. If he stuck around for the rest of the day, he would know better.

There are six stages to the grief a fan experiences when a big trade like this happens:
anger
denial
depression
bargaining
acceptance
optimism

There are fans here, and everywhere else, at varying stages of all six. Dreger is simply cherry picking the most sensationalistic and negative part in a bid to pump up Leafs fans.

Higgins is ok and is struggling, but at the expense of Prust?

If it were just Jokinen for Higgins, i'd be ok with that, cause I think it's just two struggling players for each other, but the Kotalik and Prust part just doesn't make any sense.

How are all these new pieced going to fit into the Sutter System with so few games left this season?
At the start of the year it was said that the system would take at least 1/3 of the season to learn and that we shouldnt judge it until 1/2 way through the season. Now were down to under 30 games left in the regular season and were adding many new players on forward and defence. What can we expect?

My guess is that this is the reason we get this done now, instead waiting for the trade deadline. Honestly, we are not going to win the cup or even getting out of the the first round.

So Sutter pulled this deal to give us a better chance of getting into the playoff and saving his butt at the same time. But really, I bet Sutter is thinking about next year when he did this.

I was at a Flames Charity Bowling and about 90% of the Flames players were there. Next to our lane was Dion Phaneuf bowling team. He sat by himself most of the night. Most of the other players were having lots of fun and talking to everyone.

Make of it what you want.

Brutal trade. There's no optimism at the end of the tunnel here. We lose 3 of them to UFA next season. And if we do re-sign them, we have gained zero cap space.

6.5 mil is ridiculous for Phaneuf. Sutter should've negotiated a second contract - something like 3 years at 3.5-4 mil, then the 3rd contract would be the star one. But it doesn't matter. If he's locked up for that price you gotta live with it considering that he was just starting to play to that contract this year.

Having player locked up for couple years means nothing if the player isn't very good, just ask Edmonton fans about their goalier who has a long term contract.

Of course, if you can lock up Ovie for a decade, that's a different story, but Dion is not Ovie. I think I have seen the best of Dion already, that's why I'm happy to see him go.
I'm not saying that Phaneuf didn't have some ups and downs this season, but it was no worse than say Regehr and Iginla.... and Phaneuf is only 24. I also think his poor play has been exaggerated a little this season and he was looking a lot better than last season. No doubt in my mind that it is a systems problem in Calgary and not a talent problem.

Besides, Ian White has his bad games and downright stinks some nights (if you watch the Leafs and Canucks on Saturday, you would see what I mean).

I hoenstly think that Phaneuf, Jokinen were as bad in the locker room as the media rumoured.

Why else do such a massive shakeup? Especially if we are not getting a number 1 C in return ( i still think that is the ultimate plan)

I was making a comparisson to the Derek Morris trade because of the similar circumstances with respect to age, and player potential.

The Al MacInnis trade happened when he was around 30, and his level of play was well established. Everyone knew at that time that he was a bonafide #1 d-man. The reason for his trade was entirely different, as it was for financial reasons only.

Derek Morris is similar to Phaneuf, in that when he was traded he was around the same age, and everyone was bellyaching that he had all this potential et al.

All I am saying is that Phaneuf could go either way.

Stajan and Mayers are UFAs.
White will be a RFA.
Hagman is signed for 2 more years after this season.

It is highly likely Sutter won't pass up on White, he'll get resigned. Mayers is good as gone after this season, and Stajan just doesn't seem like he would fit into a Sutter system. He just doesn't seem like that type of player.

I'd be in favour of keeping Stajan. All this Kotalik talked has opened my eyes to what kind of player Stajan is to be honest lol
I think he'd fit in well in the Sutter system. He seems like the type of player who puts the team first, and goes all out.

Hagman and White should.

Stajan will likely be dealt in a package deal.
