Although it's natural to compare to the Gilmour trade -- and I plead guilty myself -- that would be unfair. First, Gilmour was an actual superstar, while Phaneuf has the ability to be a superstar but isn't; a big difference. Second, the Flames did actually get some value back; Leeman was completely done, no longer even an NHL caliber player, and that was obvious from his first game. Hagman is at least pretty good, and Stajan and White are certainly better than anyone the Flames got in the Gilmour deal. So this isn't as bad.
Still, I wouldn't have made it. Phaneuf still has the ability to be an outstanding defenseman, while nothing the Flames got back has anything like that ability. It doesn't make the Flames a championship calibre team now, and it certainly doesn't help them much in the future unless they do something really impressive with the cap space. The trade has at least a 25% chance of being a disaster without an impressive upside; I don't like the odds, even if it's nowhere near as idiotic as the Gilmour trade.

Ouch no love for Lanks, dude has an 77 point season and numerous 50 plus point seasons under his belt (8 I think) and currently has a chance to score 20 plus goals in 8 straight seasons, but he needs to hurry up and get 9 more to achieve that. Just sayin, Lanks has proven himself a lot more than Hagman, whom I think is also a good player, he just reminds me of the lazy, unmotivated version of Kovalev. Hopefully he can make an impact.

Thornton for not one superstar but a bunch of role players. What did Boston get from that. Cap room to sign, Chara, Savard, etc. They now are a playoff team, now if they didn't make that trade they would still be trying for fits to play along with Thornton.
|
Any cap space we gained in this is lost if we try to resign or replace Bourque, Stajan and Jokinen.
The only way to be competetive and cap friendly in this league is to get players who can contribute on 1st and sometimes 2nd contracts. Building through free agency is not sustainable.

AND Mr Joe still has NOT hoisted a stanley cup.
I love this trade and have known about it since I heard it was gonna happen from a friend of a friend from a dads sisters cousin
The fact that Dion asked for this trade and was killing Brent Slowly from all other rumours spewed about makes it all the better.
Now this team really has its work cut out for it.
Mayers ...last shot.
White.....sounds good from all accounts.
Hagman.....played with Ollie before and did well.
Stajan....will suprise a few people me thinks

Yes he scores and gets points, but he's really predictable on the powerplay, just get in the shooting lane.
Gio's role has been expanding all year and I believe this will clear up some room at the end of the year for us to give him the deal he deserves
|
Phaneuf's been a minus player for one season in his career. He is a +3 this year and is a career +19.

What a joke! They missed the playoffs for 3 years in a row after that trade, were among the bottom feeders of the league, and they fired their entire coaching staff and GM. Yeah, what a great model to follow. I'm so relieved now

One thing is for sure, Iginla and Regehr are running out of excuses.
1) Word was Iggy wanted Conroy back, and got his wish.
2) Word was Regehr wanted Phaneuf gone, and got his wish.
Oddly enough, those two are both having subpar years. Next time Regehr gets run around on in the defensive zone, I wonder who he'll complain about in the locker room?
Last point: the Flames, as an organization, are now treading in dangerous territory. I do believe that the organization has a positive reputation in the league. However, if they're allowing Iginla and Regehr to generally dictate the team's moves*, then I think it makes for a less attractive situation to prospective free agents. Who wants to be at an organization that they perceive will only treat them well provided they stay popular with the "capos" of the offense and defense?
* I realize that D. Sutter makes the trades. However, I'm not dumb enough to assume that he doesn't try to placate his "core."

Hagman has score more than 20 goals the past 3 seasons. Stajan has scored around 15. So I am basing scoring on PAST historical consistent data. No "potential" assumption there. If anything the potential assumption would be that Stajan could score more playing on the Flames top line.

Despite his tremendous upside, from a personal standpoint am not sad to see Dion on his way out. I firmly believe he was the right "tooth" to "extract". Have virtually no read on these Leafs coming over, look forward to learning/reading/hearing more and more about them in the coming days. Just hearing Dion on the fan now. I believe he IS excited to be a Toronto Maple Leaf (could be whomever). All the best to him.

Iginla has one of the best reputations in the league. Very few players would be turned off if Iginla has big pull within an organization.

Gio > Dion.
With Dion - no money to re-sign Gio.
Without Dion - A player better than Dion at about 3 million cheaper.
Add White & Hagman. Stajan Rental. Done deal. I like it.

Why do Flames fans keep saying this? His video on TSN.ca from his interview this morning states he did not ask for a trade and Phaneuf was crying. As an Oilers fan, I think Phaneuf was given a tough time by Flames fans. A 24 year old defenseman who has the most goals since he came into the league, has been nominated for a Norris Trophy already and is one of the best young dmen in the game......sure he is having an off year compared to his first 3 years but he is still a franchise defenseman.

Finally saw Dion's interview. Does not look happy at all about the trade. It was obvious he was not working out here. Maybe this is something that will finally humble him. He's shown that he has all the tools to be a very good player. I don't think anyone will be surprised to see him become a 60 point player constantly.
I like the route Sutter went in picking up 4 guys instead of landing some sort of big fish (Marleau type). If Jokinen gets it going JayBo starts producing more and these guys can step up their play Calgary can be a cup countener epecially with the way Kipper is playing.

But like I said... points on another team do not translate to points on this team. When several of our offensive players are not performing to what they should be, why would you think Hagman and Stajan will? It's anything but a sure thing, so you are absolutely talking about potential. In Toronto's system, Jokinen could very well have the number of points as Hagman, and Hagman would probably not have 20 goals if he was here the whole season.
