The difference is Boston wasn't trying to win. We are.

Oh, he'll get just as ripped on this board like Huselius did... Disappearing in games...

Leafs/Flames fan here, don't know what to think about the trade. Initially when I heard it I thought that the Leafs got a bit fleeced on it, considering how underrated White and Hagman are, and considering that Stajan has been solid his entire career in Toronto while playing with garbage linemates. Then again those three are some of my favourite Leafs players. But then I thought a bit more, and thought Calgary didn't get enough back for Phaneuf+Sjostrom+Aulie, there should be a pick thrown in there too (if only the Leafs still had their first...).
But most Leafs fans think that they won the deal (althought it might be euphoria transferring over from somehow duping Anaheim into Blake+Toskala for Giguere). As I like the Leafs and Flames equally, I still don't really know what to think. I'm really excited to see Hagman, Stajan, and White in Flames jerseys, and excited to see if Phaneuf can pick up his play with a change of scenery.

If this is a situation where Dion was requesting a trade, problematic in the dressing room or had an obvious attitude problem, trading him sooner is much better for this team than later. Add in the fact that we earn extra cap space by making the trade sooner, and allow all the pieces we obtained to practice with the team over the Olympic break.
Also, I am certain that with the cap room we have earned and the excess players we have on the roster now, there is at least one more deal on the horizon, probably including either
a) picks coming our way.
b) top line forward.
I expect something to materialize by the end of the Olympic break but it might take untill the trade deadline.

Its simple. You do it now cause its a big core trade. You need mroe time to get the players all on the same page and mroe time to play together.

They're both underacheiving d-men that act like clueless pylons that can't clear the zone properly.
I ask only one mininum task from d-men: Clear the damned zone.

That's what I'm most hopeful about. This could be the most significant factor going forward.

well, the deal is done.
I would have prefered a guy like Kadri or Stralman (leaf prospects) to be part of the deal, thats for sure...Kadri would have been a tough sell, but maybe we could have gotten Stralman.
People are analyzing this purely based on skill and talent, which is fair, but there is probably a chemistry thing going on here too - its not like there hasn't been tons of rumours with regard to friction in the locker room.
Phaneuf and his potential is the wild card here...the kid has all the tools, but never the toolbox. Maybe the light comes on for him in TO, in which case, we lose the trade...and maybe Dion tops out like a guy like Derrick Morris did?
who knows. The trade is done and all we can do is wait and see how these guys fit in.

It never fails to surprise me how quickly a players talents diminish in fans eyes once he is traded from their team.

Another thing I don't understand is why wouldn't Sutter get rid of Sarich when he had the chance. No one will take Sarich at the trade deadline.

I am not one to gossip so I have not talked about this before. Frankly I believe that negative communication breeds negative situations and that does not help our team, but now that Phaneuf is gone I will speak up.
My roommate (I will not post his name) is lower level security and interacts with the players almost everyday. We talked about Dion often and he says Dion was not quick witted and that he believed he was gods gift to god himself, and was a complete fata most of the time. I'm not saying that is why Sutter traded him. I believe Sutter still saw all those tools in him thus, he did not want to trade Dion. I do believe once Dion saw his "Star Status" fall his ego decided that he wanted to leave. He will be better than Morris but not the Super Star we all thought he could be.
We have received a great return for him, and time will tell.

a) I'm not sure how much time you spend on Calgarypuck, but I think missed a lot of posts regarding Dion Phaneuf
b) I would also say it's amazing how much a player's talents increase in fans eyes when he is traded off a rival's team.

No, I'm just kidding. It was just funny to hear how shocked and sullen they sounded. Major life upheaval when you've got to move your family.
