IMO the "better team" doesn't put the ball on the ground a bajillion times, and throw a couple of INTs on top of that.
Despite putting the ball on the ground "a bajillion times" the Vikings were in a position to kick a field goal to win the game. A bad penalty and a very poor decision by the QB cost the Vikings the game.
I'm sorry, outside of the dumb turnovers, they had a chance to win the game multiple times (yes, I'm counting the possesion inside the red zone before the end of the first half).
They held an explosive Saints offense to 265 total yards, put up almost 475 yards on offense. Held an "explosive" Bush to 8 total yards.
So I'd say the Vikings were slightly better than the Saints, and I haven't heard an argument from a Saints fan yet. They won the game, and I hope they make the best of the opportunity in the Super Bowl. But, in my opinion, the better team lost on Sunday night.

I would blame that more on the coach for calling 2 no gain rushing plays in a row after Favre had used his arm to drive them to that field position in the first place.

So if you were in Miami in the following weeks and somehow found a place to stay, how much do you think you'd be forking over for two tickets? Just something I've been wondering about

I'm not really blaming anyone. Just arguing that the Vikings essentially blew the game instead of losing to a better opponent. Not to take anything away from the Saints though. They deserve the victory.

The Saints won, and they deserve the credit for limiting turnovers. But ex turnovers the Vikings dominated. If that game is any indication, Favre should definately come back IMO - even though I cant stand him. He completely outplayed Brees.

It was pretty much the Saints/Vikes game from the previous season in reverse, where the Saints went up and down the field only to turn the ball over at bad times, ultimately costing them the game. I thought the Vikings played well but not overly smart.

I have some buddies going down and they've found that the cheapest tickets are between $1,600 and $1,800. And those are for nosebleed seats.
One of those going to Miami is a huge huge Colts fan, trying to convince him to find a single ticket and soak it all in.

Hey don't get me wrong, I'm not taking anything away from the Saints victory, I'm just responding to a comment I find to be comical and incorrect.

If it was me and the Chiefs made the Super Bowl, I wouldn't go to the game even if money was no object. The Super Bowl has become too corporate. I would go to Kansas City and watch it in a sports bar along with my fellow Chiefs fans with a huge rack of ribs in front of me. Then if the Chiefs win I would watch the gun shooting in the air along with the cop car burning in person.

I'd love to be in New Orleans for the game at a local bar! Which likely means there is a huge rack in front of me as well.
This was at a sports bar in Dallas after the game winning kick, 500+ hurricane displaced fans:

One area of the game where I think the Saints dominated and hasn't gotten enough attention is on special teams. Morestead forced explosive guys like Percy Harvin into taking a knee in the endzone on seemingly every kick-off. The Saints were also tackling very well on punts, something I was very impressed with considering arguably our best ST player in Malcolm Jenkins was out. Meanwhile, the Saints were getting big returns from both Courtney Roby and Pierre Thomas all game, setting up great field position, including on what ended up being the game-winning drive.
For the Saints fans on here, I think we all remember how in the '06 NFC Championship, Chicago punter Brad Maynard basically turned the game around for the Bears in the 2nd half with constant coffin corner kicks, I've never seen a punter play so well. In fact I think where the Saints finally fell apart was on that Brees safety, which started when Maynard forced the Saints to start their drive on their own 2.
As we all know, games can easily be won and lost on ST play. The Saints were clearly the better team in this area, so its not surprising they won the game.

I wouldn't say he completely outplayed him, considering Brees had 3 TD's to 0 INT's, meanwhile Favre had a couple picks, including a boneheaded one late that essentially killed their season. But I agree he was the better of the two on Sunday. Ya as I posted on here yesterday, even though I'm a serious Favre-hater, I gained mad respect for his toughness in that game. I can't believe he didn't miss a single snap with some of those hits he was taking. Visante Shiancoe played lights out too, that guy's something else.
Ya I don't know what was with Brees in that 2nd half, he was just...off. I haven't seen him miss open receivers like that in a long time. The ball just kept sailing on him. At the time I was actually a little worried he had hurt his throwing arm or something. I expect a much better performance from him in the Super Bowl, I have a feeling he's going to want to prove how good he is to the people of Miami specifically, for obvious reasons..

That return by Thomas set up the whole overtime for the Saints. Pretty clutch play for a guy who was more or less back there because the other guy Roby had been injured earlier.
Anytime you have a team win a game where the other team had more yards on offence like what happened in the NFC Championship game, if you go back and add in return yardage from kickoffs, punts, interceptions, and fumble returns chances are the yardage total will swing to the team who won. In a year where a lot of veteran kickers botched makeable kicks at key times, Hartley hit that one right on the money.

Exactly. I'm sick and really have nothing to do, including sleeping which won't be happening, may as well crunch some numbers..
(actually I was working on it and discovered someone on wdz.com had already done the heavy lifting)
Total yardage #'s with all the extras included:
Minnesota- 523, New Orleans- 474(difference of 49 yards)
This is how it breaks down:
Minnesota
Passing: 310
Rushing: 165
KO Returns: 33
Punt Returns: 15
INT Returns: 0
Fumble Returns: 0
New Orleans
Passing: 189 (this includes -8 yard for the 1 fumble/sack)
Rushing: 68
KO Returns: 183
Punt Returns: 0
INT Returns: 29
Fumble Returns: 5
Also, average yards per punt: Saints-51, Vikings-39.
--So over-all, the Vikes still won the yardage battle, but by 49 yards, as opposed to the over 200 when you just compare offences.
