I see what you did there... you created an artificial separation between the experience and the movie. Trust me, without the movie, the theatre experience is a very boring one. You can't say it's a great experience but a bad movie. Well you can, but I'm calling you on it.
If the movie is so great, try watching it not in 3d....
No, and I don't plan on ever sitting through three hours of that.
Let me put it this way. I could ad 3d visual effects to Spiderman 3 or Batman and Robin to make the whole experience entertaining. I would never ever refer to those as good movies though. Avatar is a mediocre movie with great effects.

I could not disagree more strongly.
The CGI in Avatar was BRILLIANT. I will refer especially to the scene of the Shuttle landing at the military base on Pandora. I looked around trying to find a way to tell that what I was watching wasn't real and I couldn't. It looked pretty damn real.
Avatar is not just about 3D. They have come far closer to photo-realistic CGI than any movie or game ever made prior. They have also made leaps and bounds forward in terms of motion/performance capture by adding a facial movement detection aspect to the whole body motion capture.
On top of all that, I know a lot of people dump on the story. I will say again that the story was very well executed, the characters were good, and the acting was very good. These aspects simply lacked originality.
You vastly underestimate Avatar.
You can't just slap 3D onto an otherwise awful movie and make it a $2 billion dollar movie. I even have a perfect example.

I disagree completely. 3D doesn't make the movie but can significantly add to the ambiance. Those movies still would be crap in 3D. Can you imagine Spiderman 3 in 3D? Terrifying.

Avatar was not a masterpiece. It did, however, change the way movies are made.
The CGI was also amazing that is true.
It think once the new technology is combined with a movie with all the other elements that make a movie good (plot, acting, dialogue, etc) you will see a true masterpiece.
Edit:
To put this another way. A masterpiece should be a near perfect film, or at the very least one that is not easily improved on.
Looking at the plot, acting, and dalogue in Avatar, there are many things that could be improved.

Acting? Really?
I thought it was Zoe Saldana's best performance. Sam Worthington was very good again and the supporting roles were played excellently. I would definitely have issue with any complaints about the acting.

i saw it in regular D, still thought it was a well told story that was well paced with important (albeit obvious) messages in place.
even though it was predictable, it still had me emphasizing with the characters and their home and the situations that were created. Very immersive story telling in regular dimensions.
Avatar has passed The Dark Knight for #2 all-time domestic!
Avatar pulled in another $36 million this weekend, doubling up on 2nd place Legion's $18 million. Avatar has now been #1 at the box office for 6 consecutive weeks.
Avatar is only $6.9 million from passing Titanic for #1 all-time worldwide!
Avatar: Total $1836.1 million worldwide.
Titanic: Total $1842.9 million worldwide.
Avatar should pass Titanic tomorrow.
In terms of the domestic market, Avatar is $48 million behind Titanic. I predict it will surpass Titanic in the middle of next week.
Avatar: Total $552.8 million domestic.
Titanic: Total $600.8 million domestic.

Damn.... i thought for sure that Avatar was going to take the intl record this weeked. It still might, these numers are just estimates and don't include actual numbers from sunday (obviously as it hasn't taken place yet).
Normally they estimate a dropoff for movies on sundays, Avatar maynot be subject to that.

They have often underestimated Avatar's numbers so it is possible that when the actuals come in it will have passed Titanic.

Gone with the Wind made $1.4 billion domestically based on 2010 dollars. Star Wars is 2nd all time adjusted.
Interesting that looking at the LOTR's movies - they got better and more successful with each movie. I wonder how often that happens. Indiana might have if not for the abortion that was #4. *After checking The last Crusade falls under Temple of Doom... But both are above Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Saw it last night with my husband and girls. It was incredible. There was a lady in front of us who brought a small and child and should not have - even that couldn't wreck the experience.
At the very beginning, I was a little concerned because the 3D was a little hard to adjust to and I thought I might end up with a headache, but soon (about 3 minutes, I think), I was immersed in Pandora and the incredible world that was unfolding around me. I even tried to brush away a burning ember, much to my delight.
My husband loves movies, but he has never sat through an entire film without getting up at least once for a stretch and a cigarette, and even he was riveted to his seat.
I even sat and watched the credits roll instead of leaping up and heading to the car for the long drive home.
And the theatre was still sold out. I bought my tickets online at about 4:30 for the 8pm show. Had to hunt around for a 3D theatre that wasn't sold out at/around that time slot.
I would love to see it again. I have the perfect movie going partner in mind for my second viewing - my nephew - who will revel in the majesty of this film as much as I did.

So I went and saw this the other night... Amazing movie, I was impressed. I am thinking about going back to see it tonight. My only complaint was the price. $15 each, I thought those were Imax prices, so when I payed for two and the total was $32 bucks, I was a little choked... $40 for a drink and tickets.... Thats kinda pushing it to say the least... But in the end, money well spent, and well I am willing to pay it again now.
