I'm not sure that Avatar didn't deserve to win for best picture. If the award were for best plot or best screenplay, then it wouldn't have deserved to be nominated, but all things considered, it was the best moviegoing experience of the year. Maybe that's not enough to make it deserving of the win, but it's enough to keep me from feeling like anyone else got cheated.

I always kind of thought the Golden Globes were more predictable and heavily influenced by popular opinion...didn't Juno win best Comedy/Musical the year it came out? I certainly don't think it stood a real chance of winning the "real" best picture.

BOX OFFICE UPDATE
Avatar becomes the 3rd movie, and by far the fastest, to ever hit $500 million domestic.
Avatar hit the mark today, its 32nd day in release.
TDK hit $500 million on its 44th day in release.
Titanic hit $500 million on its 98th day in release.

Sorry, this might be a dumb question, but do they adjust that for ticket prices? Titanic came out when they were charging $5 or $6 a movie. Avatar cost me $15 to watch.

They dont adjust.
Box Office Mojo does track movies by adjusted price: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted.htm
Gone with the Wind made $1.4 billion domestically based on 2010 dollars. Star Wars is 2nd all time adjusted.

Probably the best measure of a movie, in my opinion, is ticket sales.
Avatar is #34 all-time in ticket sales. Since this measures only the number of tickets sold and not any dollar amount, it is a better measure IMO.
#34 Avatar has sold 69.6 million tickets.
#6 Titanic sold 128.3 million tickets.
#27 The Dark Knight sold 74.3 million tickets.
#1 Gone With the Wind sold 202 million tickets.
All ticket sales and adjusted grosses are domestic only.
If I had to guess I would say that, by the end of its run, I figure Avatar will probably have sold about 90 million tickets, which would make it #15 all-time.
The problem is that comparing movies from even a decade apart is difficult. The realities of the movie business change a lot. Back when Gone With the Wind was released there were not many movies made and the ones that were good stayed in the theaters for very long periods of time.
Even with Titanic, there were fewer quality releases and thus Titanic was able to remain #1 at the box office for 15 weeks. I would consider that record nigh-unbreakable. Avatar MIGHT be able to pull off 9 or so weeks which is utterly amazing but it has little hope of beating 15 weeks.
At the end of the day I don't think Avatar's accomplishments should be dismissed because the ticket prices are higher now. It will likely make over $2.0 billion dollars and no matter what era you live in, that is amazing.

The other thing to consider is entertainment options. Television didn't even exist when Gone with the Wind came out, so if you wanted to do something other than read a book or listen to the radio, you had to go to the theatre. Now there are hundreds of channels, sporting events, internet (not bootlegs), bootlegs, video games, and the list goes on.
Bottom line: It's freaking impressive.

Thought this thread deserved a bump. Avatar is in a position to possibly break the record for all time international box office this weekend.
If it continues at it's current pace, it will probably break the domestic record in the next 10 to 14 days. It will move into #2 all time this weekend for sure.

I am sad for the state of the world after reading this... what a crappy flick to go down with that kind of history... IMO...
What's next, the Canucks take a run at a Cup?
CPer's overreacting to a losing skid?
... Uh oh

I think the fact that Transformers 2 and Twilight making as much money as they did says more about the state of the world than Avatar breaking records.
At least Avatar was a good movie!

The fact that the current record holder is Titanic is a lot worse...
But yeah I'll echo the general consensus: Avatar is a crappy movie, but the visual effects are amazing.

Actually the general consensus is that Avatar is an awesome movie overall with a story that isn't original.
Just a few very loud people who complain a lot who don't like it.

The overall experience is fantastic. The movie itself, the plot, the dialogue, the story.... somewhat lacking.

Seriously, hold off the kool-aid. Everyone and their mother know that Avatar is a boring movie, visual effects have driven sales to $1.5+Billion.
I haven't talked to one person who thinks Avatar is a good movie, aside from the effects.
I hope it takes over Titanic though. I'm just happy that Cameron A CANADIAN, has the 2 highest grossing movies of all time.

Finally saw Avatar with a 3 other couples we all were in complete awe of the visuals. Take from it what you will as far as the storyline. If you think the plot is weak so be it, or that its thought provoking so be it.
Masterpieces are always subject to interpretation.
This is a cinematic visual masterpiece. 3 hours went by like 30 minutes.
Either way go see this movie its well worth it.

I see what you did there... you created an artificial separation between the experience and the movie. Trust me, without the movie, the theatre experience is a very boring one. You can't say it's a great experience but a bad movie. Well you can, but I'm calling you on it.
