I think what would make Reggie's point more convincing is that, if in your example, the spots closest to the 'dome is $24 and the ones by 25th Ave are $12, then no one would (should) make a fuss about it, you either pay it or someone else with more money will.
This random designated spot thing is pissing everyone off because some groups are getting what some might consider undeserved special treatment--but Reggie's and some others people's argument is that businesses will cater to those who they think are richer/have more money to spend, hence these BS "reserved" spots, and because us Canadians are generally nice & gullible people , we will generally obey the signs even thought they are unenforceable by law.
That's what I got from his post anyways.

Workers of the world unite, you have nothing to lose but your chains!!!
Seriously though ....
You don't think you're making a MAJOR leap by suggesting a store or mall which has an UNENFORCEABLE policy of allowing hydrid owners to park nearer to the door than others is somehow discriminating against people who don't own or (god forbid) can't afford a hybrid?
If you really have an issue, do something productive and boycott the stores.
Why don't you direct your outrage towards forming a winning FB group - something along the lines of that group posting the smackdown that wannabee rapper got from the transit cops? I'm sure you'll find lots of 'like-minded' thinkers such as yourself.
One last question. Do the parking spots some stores attempt (unenforceable also) to set aside for expectant mothers qualify as discriminatory too? If a couple is too poor or otherwise unable to have children why should they be denied access to that 'primo' parking?

An expectant mother clearly has something that sets her aside from the general public. We are talking about two people with nothing setting them aside here but the car they drive.

Sounds like somebody hasn't read the entire thread; as this was discussed at length.
And more importantly, it seems that people are blowing MJM's comments Waaaaaay out of proportion. We all have a good and evil side to us, and what MJM said was that for a split second the "Evil MJM" thought about keying somebody's car as parking closer based on vehicle driven seems a little snobby. He then went on to say that if many other people had the same thought, then eventually somebody who's evil side is louder than the good side might actually do it.
Somebody presented a different opinion here, and instead of listening to what was said people decided that they needed to show some sort of moral superiority.
And I think that if we heard of a Calgary store offerring "Oilers fan parking", and a car with an Oiler flag was parked there and got keyed- we would be seeing a "ha ha- stupid Oilers" post.

LOL. The government would get involved? The Alberta government?
The Flames could issue special parking stickers for lower bowl season ticket holders, for instance, and tack it on to the annual price. Not a damn thing the government could do about it.

Yes. Yes I do.
I myself drive a hybrid and was not aware of special parking stalls until I saw this thread. If I come across one, I will definitely use it. So I thank the OP for the heads-up. How many stalls are we talking about on average? Two? Four? Ten rows? I don't shop at a lot of malls or big box stores.
And no, I'm not rich. You don't need to be rich to drive a hybrid.

They already do. Life isn't fair. Get used to it.
Other than I suppose mass mental well-being, I'm not sure what the Flames and the Healthcare system have to do with each other.

Well, I've got a word for guys that go around keying cars for no particular reason other than kicks or envy. I don't care what town you live in. It's no different than some unemployed loser in Windsor Ont. going around keying imports.
In true Calgarypuck tradition, you're just bitching about something trivial.

I can't help you.
You clearly have no response because you keep going back to me saying I would key someone's car when I clearly didn't say that.
Thanks for coming out though.

That would be discrimination based on intelligence, not income level.

Only if it's fuel efficient. People who drive "gas guzzling suvs" will continue to be burned at the stake. Especially Hummers.

Why shouldn't I be judging people by the car they drive? The stores in Calgary obviously are, something you've clearly indicated you are all for.

Keying your customers' cars would be bad for business, no?
Not even an autobody shop would do that.

Sens do that.
Pay for premium parking that gets you out early.

My God, I'm outraged! What has the Ontario government done to stop this horrible misuse of people's money?

Which one?
Paying for the parking or to watch the Senators?

To tell you the truth, I was at the Honda dealership last year. I had my budget and was looking at a CRV to replace my RAV4 when I cast my eyes across the lot and saw the Civic Hybrid.
What the heck, I thought. Gas is trending towards $1.50 a litre. Plus I thought it would be kind of neat to try out a different kind of car.
Guess what? I Hyper-Mile. It's really a fun and challenging activity. I don't give a crap what others think. I gas up once a month.
I not really a tree-hugger. Just thought it would be cool to drive something different.
Businesses want to give me front-row parking? LOL. Like I said, I haven't encountered it yet and I'm not going out of my way to find it either.
MJM and ken really need to get over themselves. Big effen deal. Half a dozen stalls at most? It's just a gimmick that will die out soon enough. In the meantime, why shouldn't I take advantage of a perk? There's all sorts of perks out there and I'm quite positive both MJM and ken have taken advantage of them.
Perferential parking spots on private property are not an affront to democracy. It's really trivial.

Hyper-miling is actually really fun but there are some days you just want to gas it. Other days, it's the only thing that makes driving interesting. It's like a game.

One's car should not be damaged simply because it it energy efficient. Oil town or not.
