Knowing gays exist is not a strain on me, but the media sensationalizing it is what annoys me the most.
It all started with Ellen coming out of the closet way back when. Like we couldn't tell she was making out with the bearded clam anyways! Then that nudist Richard guy on the original Survivor....which I quit watching after the first season by the way. Recently it was big news that Brian Burkes kid was gay.....
You mean you didn't hear all the hoopla about Adam Lambert making out with a dude on stage at the Amercian Music Awards? I don't watch American Idol but that is where he came from. Anyways after that a bunch of his appearances at other shows were cancelled, and there was "outrage" about the "discrimination".....gay characters have even appeared in my favourite show Two and a Half Men! The one place I thought was free of gay propaganda.....it seems I just can't get away from it.......
It just doesn't seem like a big deal at all. I think you mentioned every big homosexual pop culture reference. Ellen came out 13 years ago!
I knew Lambert was on idol and that he kissed a dude at an awards show, but beyond that I probably couldn't pick him out of a lineup. I remember some hoopla, but truthfully I don't see a big deal. I've been in situations where I've seen guys make out with girls and guys make out with other guys ... both make me a little uncomfortable from the standpoint that I don't like public affection.
I don't really feel it fair if I attack you too much on your position. How you feel about gays is pretty much how I feel about rednecks and religious people, so we'll just continue to disagree.

To me this is key. It's similar to using the old gem "I'm not a racist but ..." and then saying something incredibly racist.

Adam Lambert also made out with a woman on stage.... I note that this doesn't strike you as "sensationalizing heterosexuality." Effectively, this is a double standard--heterosexuals can be open about their sexual preference, homosexuals cannot. Resisting that double standard is not "sensationalizing" anything, it's just standing up for what's right in a free society.
Seems to me the only one who's creating "hoopla" about homosexuality is you. Maybe you secretly wish that it wasn't gay culture that was being jammed down your throat.

I didn't see the Adam Lambert thing live, but I heard all about it on the radio days after it happened.......
Homophobe as defined in the dictionary;
a person who fears or hates homosexuals and homosexuality.
I don't think of myself as "hateful" towards them..
I treat gay culture and religious folks in the same way. Have your view and enjoy your life, but don't try to rub it in my face constantly...

Dude, I totally understand.
I hate it when minorities that I totally have no problem with show up in my favourite shows too.
I mean, yeah, a gay dude (that I totally have no problem with) showed up on Two and a Half Men, and almost ruined it.
And a while back Wayne Brady, who's black (and I have no problem with that), was on How I Met Your Mother. I mean seriously, why did they have to have a black guy on that show? There are already black people on Survivor and American Idol.
And then I found out that Jerry Seinfeld is Jewish (which is cool and all, I don't have a problem with it), but he got his own show! I mean, there are a lot of Jewish guys on TV already, did they really need to cast a Jew in one of the funniest shows of all time.
I just wish they'd stop shoving all of this gay, black, and Jewish culture down our throats.

You done yet?
The irony is that the whole premise of Two and a Half Men is the guys' struggle with the women in their lives.
The point I was trying to make was not that a gay character simply made an appearance on my fav show, but that gay culture is seen EVERYWHERE.
Its' media exposure far exceeds its presence in our society, which makes no sense to me.

Has it occurred to you that this may be because there are gay people everywhere?
Seriously--if you don't like gay people, man up and own your homophobia. Don't pretend that it isn't homophobic to never want to hear about or see someone acting gay around you.

I bet a Canadian star player like Joe Thornton coming out of the closet would be BIG news in Canada here, and would get intense media attention for quite awhile. This is what annoys me. In 2009, it should not be a big deal whenever a famous person admits to being gay.....
Absolutely true, but the irony is it's positions like yours that keep it a big deal.

Well, I could argue that Jews are far more prevalent on TV than they are in regular society, and that I'm angry that their culture is seen EVERYWHERE, but what would that make me?
How is that different than your stance on gays?

Read the thread Iowa.....
Actually, I think the problem you're having is that people are reading your posts in this thread. You just don't seem to understand the implications of what you're saying.
Your attitude is that you're okay with people being gay as long as they are also underrepresented in our culture and forced to live in the closet (because you never want to see them holding hands or making out and stuff--you know, things heterosexual couples do all the time). You also don't want to see any kind of cultural production that admits that gay people exist, to the point where it bothers you if the occasional character in a television show is gay. That's called homophobia. I don't care if you don't like it--sometimes the truth hurts.
I actually take the opposite view of yours: there aren't enough gay people on television. Specifically, there aren't enough gay people on TV who don't just personify stereotypes that our culture has about gay people--and not enough gay people who actually do normal things that gay people in real life do--like actually having romantic relationships with other people of the same sex. Think of Will and Grace: how many boyfriends did Will have?
He had to be living through the longest, gayest dry spell in history.
Gay people on television almost never date other people, hook up with anybody or have sex. Think Kurt on Glee, who is the only kid in that high school not getting busy. Isn't that a little odd? Doesn't that show that our culture is still a little uncomfortable with this issue?
Here's my opinion: more gay people on TV, please. Also, more gay romantic relationships, more gay hookups and more gay sex. Let's bring it right into the mainstream and we can all get over our stupid little hangups. Unless I'm "forcing that down your throat" too.

Then why do you keep watching gay tv shows?

It's only a big deal still because of people reacting like you do.
