I still swear Shaw is throttling my connection every time I start a Torrent DL.

They probably are. I don't doubt that every ISP throttles bit torrent traffic, just some more than others. Typically, you'll get throttled if traffic is high when you're trying to download or if you've been downloading for a long period of time. ISPs hate people that leave file sharing on constantly because they don't know how to shut it down, and a lot of them will throttle based on how long you've been uploading/downloading.

Why are you guys still torrenting when Shaw has farmed out their usenet services to highwinds and you can get like 30 days retention on the same usenet farms as some of the premium services?

Sure it's not 365 days retention (btw, which only costs like $9-$11 a month from some of the providers) but it works great for anything released in the past 30 days.

Shaw has 5MBPS cap for their usenet but that's still ridiculously fast.

Glasnost will tell you if your ISP is manipulating BT traffic (needs Java). The last time I tried it I got no interference from Shaw.

Edit: The test finally finished and I got no interference from Shaw. I've never seen anything of the sort in my 5+ years with them.

Cool test. No interference with Telus either.

Shaw has never throttled torrent traffic in Calgary as I understand it. Arbor Elacoya, which they have used in smaller cities at times has not been deployed here as far as I am aware.

Bottom line is, torrents mess with network traffic and are very bad for everyone involved in terms of creating congestion. Go with usenet and you wont even feel any change to your ability to surf etc plus it will be faster for you.

Your ISP possibly rate limits your BitTorrent uploads. In our tests a TCP uploads achieved at least 836 Kbps while a BitTorrent upload achieved maximal 168 Kbps.
When I took that test...here in Victoria.

Edit: Yet when I hop on my neighbors connection and do the test I get no rate limits. WTF?!?!

Every time I try to get into the whole usenet thing, all I ever see is a million spam messages and the odd piece of useless, 4 year old software.

Clearly, I'm missing something here.

I went on Pirate Bay a week ago for the first time in months, and got a virus attaching spyware on my computer - JUST FROM VISITING THE SITE. I didn't even DL anything and it was automatically installing stuff on my computer. Had to do a backup restore. Watch out for the site...I'm not sure if it's run by the same people anymore.

Whats usenet? I still torrent and it kills my connection. My brother, being the idiot he is, always has it open and I always have to go yell at him to close the program because it crashes everything, internet, xbox live, etc.

Usenet is also known as newsgroups, one of the oldest forms of internet communication, around since the late 70s. Sort of like the earliest electronic bulletin board where you can post messages and download them. Also one of the oldest ways to post and transfer files through binaries (raw data posted as text). Postings are anonymous, difficult to track. It's the first avenue of distribution for most files actually.

The beauty is that the files are all hosted by a server that is provided by your own ISP (unless you subscribe to a premium service which I recommend as you can get a year of retention these days) therefore there are no things like queing, seeding, file sharing, etc. It's just a straight download from the server at the maximum speed of your connection.

If you are interested in seeing what's posted on usenet, try a quick search:
http://www.binsearch.info/

You'll need a newsreader or another program that accepts NZB files to download binaries and you need to know the address to your ISP's usenet server. Shaw has farmed theirs out to Highwinds recently.

What you guys who are seeing a million spam messages and not any useful files are just not using it properly. You're likely using only a oldstyle news reader like XNEWS or Outlook and downloading the headers manually when you should be using a proper search engine like binsearch or newzleech that has done the work already to find files.

It can be a bit complicated with a bit of a learning curve at first and I can't really hold your hands but just do some googling and you should be able to figure it out.

You'll probably also need winrar as binaries are always posted in multiple parts and a PAR2 program to repair any files.

If you want to try it out for free, I believe only Shaw users can really do that in Calgary. I think Telus and Rogers removed access to usenet while Shaw actually farmed their services out to a U.S. company that does a better job than Shaw ever did themselves.

1. Binsearch Use it to search for NZB Files
2. NZB-o-matic To download the rar files
3. QuickPar To verify the rar files, and fill in whatever is missing using the parity file (.PAR) if it is included.
4.Winrar To unarchive the rar files
5.VLC To play the files
...
6. Profit!!!

Not that I have ever done such a thing, but my friend told me that he uses those and it is like gold.

I heard of people using Grabit to download nzb files, it also verifies, fixes, and extracts the rar files. Nice to save a couple steps, or so I hear. Makes it easier for my friend to download...stuff.

I just go to a few sites that list nzb titles.

1. www.nzbmztrix.com (free)
2. www.newzbin.com (pay)
