The Pirate Bay taken down

The Swedish authorities have succeeded in taking it down by threatening their ISP with a large fine. The Pirate Bay is one of the more popular torrent sites out there, and also probably the biggest public tracker of torrents (openbittorrent tracker is also down).

It'll probably be back up again in a few days, but it may be tough(er) to get any torrents until then.

The ISP, Black Internet, has since reported "sabotage" and has called in police help:

Well, I don't really want to check the link at work, but when I posted that it had been down for over 24 hours.

Plus the site is pretty useless if the trackers are still down anyway (I don't want to check those either).

In unrelated news:

• Move ticket sales are up
• blockbuster announces record growth in movie rentals
• CD sales/downloads are up
• Internet traffic is down 50%
• People are already getting bored with wacking it to the same pron
• teenagers are coming out of their parents basements.

There's an exception in the Copyright Act that relates to downloading music. Not applicable to downloading other content in Canada though.

I don't mind torrents and used to use PB alot but Newsgroups are where its at. Much faster transfer rates.

I use torrentz, where it just gives you links to sites that have the torrent.

Mininova is the next site to go

Mininova, one of the biggest torrent file-sharing websites in the world, has removed links to all copyrighted content that it does not have official agreements for.
Thursday's move is a win for the entertainment industry as users of the site are now cut off from a major source of torrent files, which link to downloads of television shows, music, movies and other copyrighted content. The victory is likely to be short-lived, though, as peer-to-peer file sharers move on to other torrent sites and new technology.

I have moved away from using torrents and using this new site that has regularly updated TV shows and movies. I think it might be legit too, since it has won some sort of award for best new site.
