Does anyone know if the upgrade version will upgrade to Win7 from XP, or is it only from Vista?

It's not glorified.
I did post my opinions using Windows 7 for the past week or so. It's at the beginning of the thread.

No offence man, I know you're one of the better posters here, but did you read the original post? The whole point of this thread is comparing Windows 7 vs Mac OS in terms of user experience.
It's a Windows/Mac thread. Getting upset about people talking about Macs in this thread is what's actually off-topic.
The hardware stuff is admittedly off-topic, but if you re-read the first 2 pages of this thread, you'll notice at least 4 posts all making the same claim about "over-priced" long before I jumped in to correct them on page 3.
Also, OBCT summed everything up perfectly. Great post!

I haven't read the other discussion, but I seem to remember something about Microsoft not supporting upgrading from WinXP.
Here are the supported steps: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l..._UpgradeFromXP
Don't be fooled my Microsoft's way of twisting words around. They call it an "upgrade," but if you actually read the steps, you'll see it's doing a full wipe and install... meaning you'll have to reinstall all your programs again.
Now, of course, like everything else in the Windows world, there is probably a hack or a backdoor that will allow you to upgrade directly from XP, but it won't be supported by MS.
Mind you, it's not like MS support actually means anything.

Whoops.. You can buy the Windows 7 Upgrade disc, but a clean install is required for XP. No biggie IMO.

I've bought a lot of very cool things second hand. My favorite guitar was bought second hand. It was far far nicer than any of the ones I bought new - is there a problem with that?

I tip my hat to you, sir. An honest, useful and constructive post in an apple vs mac thread... I never thought I'd live to see the day. A simple 'Thanks' didn't seem like enough.

And the Apple propaganda machine rolls on... Goebbels would be proud.
It is true that MS does not have a straight upgrade from XP to W7... just as it doesn't from ME, 98, etc. Is it really a huge deal? Backup your stuff and wipe it clean... big deal.
Don't be fooled by FanIn80's way of twisting words. SL does not support many of the programs you love.... ya i said, serious compatibility issues.

Windows XP was released in 2001
Max OS Xv10.0 was released in 2001 - code named "Cheetah"
So what the Mac Mafia is saying is that you could upgrade Cheetah to Snow Leopard?
HAHAHAHAH. You cant even upgrade Tiger (Max OS Xv10.4 2005) to Snow Leopard.
I wonder if the white glowing Apple logo kills brain cells?

It's also funny that Apple released 6 operating systems in the time that Microsoft released 2. When you think about it that way it's really no wonder why Apple software development is leaps and bounds ahead of MS.
But I know, I know, backward compatibility, yada, yada, yada...

Ya, I read it, and knew it would end up with the inevitable Mac vs. PC in the end. I held out hope that people who had installed Windows 7 would discuss their pro's and con's as compared to Vista and/or XP.
A naiive thought process on my end, but I will now step out of this thread and let you kids fight amongst yourselves.

No operating system helps or prevents the risks of the internet.

I always find it pretty funny how upset people get over these sorts of things. Its an OS, not the end of the world. Thats like having people argue based on brands of clothes... Do I buy $200 pair of jeans? Nope! Do I bash people who do, not at all.. same deal.
I just installed windows 7 on my imac, so I've got both, its the way to go!

What the hell are you talking about?
Someone asked a direct question and I gave the true, accurate answer. What did I do wrong? Seriously, this Apple-User hate crap is getting pretty pathetic.
If you READ the link I provided from Microsoft that answers the question that was asked, it CLEARLY calls the process an UPGRADE, but then describes the steps involved to WIPE YOUR HARD DRIVE in INSTALL FROM SCRATCH.
I pointed this out to avoid any confusion.
You're clearly taking this discussion way too seriously.

The original post was about comparing Windows 7 to Mac OS, so if you were "holding out hope" that people would stay on topic by "comparing Windows 7 to Vista and/or XP," then you obviously didn't read the original post at all.
Maybe you're confused between this thread about Windows 7 vs Mac OS with one of the other threads about Windows 7?

The only thing I'm disappointed about with Windows 7 is that it hasn't arrived yet. I did the Future Shop pre-order and it is still in transit. Stupid Mississauga distribution centre!
