When I read about this at work, I couldn't stop laughing at some kid floating away in a balloon. Now I'm just glad he's OK, because I felt like quite the ass when somebody told me it wasn't really funny.

I hate living in a world where this is international, spellbinding news. The "story" over the coming days will likely be about the coverage of the "story". Navel gazing at its most shameful. **** you media conglomerates.
Now we'll have to see this on all those magazine covers too...People, etc. I am SO sick of delivering magazines with John and Kate on the cover. It's dismaying. Why do people want to know about them?
This is what is insane about instantaneous information flow.
Makes me feel a bit nostalgic for the good old days, when time and space still existed between an event and its reportage.
Wait - forget it! Balloon Boy is trending on Twitter! Must be a new development...
I hear you. I remember thinking the same thing the day Michael Jackson died. I remember that thread where it was only speculation at the time and there was up to the second reports on every news site, twitters, facebook pages, blackberrys, everything. Its crazy. The information age is so distracting. I remember the days I would go home from work or school and then find out on the evening news about stuff that happened that day. Now I barely digest one thing before some type of alert pops up about another. I'm amazed that anyone in our society gets any work done anymore.

There really should be some kind of prerequisite for threads like these.
Maybe an IQ test could be administered to posters before they even attempt to post a comment, this would protect the (CP) Members who don't have the ability to foresee the outcome of live events.
It's just embarrassing for gullible people like me. Had I known I would fall for this story "hook, line & sinker", I never would have bothered paying attention or posting updates or worse yet, expressing my concern for a 6 year old child that I don't know, or have any connection with.
This entire Board obviously needs to be segregated in order to avoid further embarrassment to the NON Clairvoyant and Sub Genius Members.

And this is exactly what is particularly wrong with american news.
Probably thousands of children die every day in all parts of the world, many of them due to malnutrition, civil war, poverty, etc. etc. indirectly brought on by the actions of great satan itself, the ol' USA. Why are people not upset by that?

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.

How many kids die because they fell out of a hot-air balloon while it was 8,000 feet in the air.

He didn't - but that's my point. Why should it matter how?

Damn you Colorado. Does Colorado ever get in the news for anything that doesn't suck? We got bird boy here, a while back we had the redneck who armoured up a bulldozer and went ape on the whole town, this place angers me.
The kid was allegedly hiding in the attic? You'd have think we'd have found this out earlier. I know if I'm not sure about my kid's status of floating in the sky I'd probably search every nook and cranny of the house first.
Man, what are your talking about... KILLDOZER guy was awesome. That guy was epic. One of the best stories of a guy taking a stand against a bunch of politicians that screwed him over. I believe the bulldozer is actually an unlockable now in a video game. Tell me this thing isn't awesome:

Hey, I agree. The American media tends to sensationalize news. Maybe they did that here too. But I also think this is valid news, and should be covered. Especially if the family was trying to get attention. They may have gotten that attention, but they're now also going to get a HUGE backlash when people find out that the father was calling the media before he called the police.

You thought from the beginning that there was no way the kid was in the balloon. There were a lot of experts saying that it was entirely possible that he was in there.
There was valid concern, and there will be valid outrage if it was done intentionally to get attention.

It isn't just the american news outlets.
As I post this, It's top story on cbc.ca/news.
It is on the front page on http://news.bbc.co.uk/
2nd most dugg topic of the day on digg.com - only included to fully emphasize how this is being reported on many news sites because that is what people want to hear about.
While there are many things going on in the world. This is an interesting story, and it captivates a large audience.
The majority of the people don't watch the news to fully get a grasp on what is going on in the world. For most people local news that directly affects them is enough.
The majority of the people watch the news so they can be included in water cooler chat.
Since the kid ratted his parents out on national news, can they now be liable for all the costs involved in following this balloon and the subsequent search for him if he fell out? All for show, give me a break. What is wrong with people?
During a live interview with CNN, Falcon said he had heard his family calling his name.
"You did?" Mayumi Heene said.
"Why didn't you come out?" Richard Heene said.
Falcon answered, "You had said that we did this for a show."
Later, Richard Heene bristled when the family was asked to clarify and said he didn't know what his son meant. He didn't ask his son what he meant by "a show."

I wonder how long you would be allowed to have a 20 foot saucer hovering over your house in Calgary? If the cops don't make you bring it down the neighbors BB guns would.
On the other hand in the states it wouldn't be a BB gun to knock it down. It would be an AK-47
