The majority of "struggling" cars I seen this morning were 4x4's with inept drivers. Not sure if tires would have helped, I'm sure they wouldn't have hurt.

That doesnt surprise me speed is alway's the number one factor in preventing winter accidents. Was wondering if anyone knows of better winter performing tires for a Jeep Liberty, mine are starting to wear and was thinking of replacing them. Winter specific or just a good off-road terrain comparison would be helpful.

On my way into work I saw 2 ladies driving minivans who both appeared absolutely terrified to be on the road.
I think that is one of the biggest issues right now - there are a bunch of drivers who refuse to believe they need to drive a bit more conservatively and another bunch who are absolutely terrified out there going slower than anyone else while hitting their brakes every time they blink. It makes for a bad combination.

There's a pretty good thread going on about winter tires:
http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=80312
I bet that if you posted your questions there, more people would be able to help you out.

I agree totally!!... All these big "tough" cars that Calgarians need so badly, but not of any help if the driver is, uhmmm, errrr... stupid... errr, not bright, errr an idiot...

I didn't see any crashes, but I saw a lot of spin-outs this morning...
I'll guess 197 haha.
Most, if not all, of the problems I saw this morning would have been avoided with winter tires (alas, it's too early for everyone to have them, even if everyone DID have them). Can't tell you how many people I passed on hills w/ rear wheel

ugh, I put off putting my winters on because of the nice weather we were suppose to be getting next week. Boy I regret that now.

I had a hard time last Thursday as my new winters sat in my garage. Put them on on Saturday.
Although I am obviously a winter tire advocate, I do appreciate the fact that it is quite hard to gauge when to put them on each winter... I mean autumn. One of my cars is dead in the water until this melts because I have balding summer tires on it with winters in a stack beside it. No jack at home means I have to drive to get them put on. I'm glad I got them on 1 of my 2 cars.

That's probably just the number that the CPS responded too. Probably a bunch where people just exchanged information and left, then will report it after work.

On my walk into work about 9 am, police had 8th St. Southbound shut down between 8th and 10th Aves. I assume that people weren't able to make it up the hill of the underpass on the 10th Ave side. I tried to take a bus in, but after 15 minutes of waiting, I just hoofed it in as usual.

Yeah, I should have been more clear. 660 reported that 46 accidents have been reported so far.

I got to see one in person this morning on my way to work on the Deerfoot. I was heading north in bumper to bumper traffic travelling at about 5-10 kmh (was near the McKenzie Town turn off) and there was this small suv heading south traveling about 50 kmh an all of a sudden it lost control and started doing a 360 deg still heading south. It hit the median barrier a couple of times (glancing blows) and then it was past me.... still heading south and out of control.

I don't know how people can live in the deep south like that. There's like 40 billion roads before you can even get to a main road. And that traffic circle is a joke. Why even bother with two lanes? Everybody just piles into the one.

I think communities more than 25kms away from the city centre should pay for their own snow removal.
