Yup Allied got it. I'm speechless, even in the Sun's poll it was at the bottom end of votes.

For the first time in my life I'm actually wishing a poll in the Sun had some clout.

Wow, that really sucks. Allied is so uninspiring. I wouldve been happy with basically any of the proposals except for that one.
We have an Allied work in NY....and everyone hates it. Unfortunately, it looks a lot like their Cantos proposal.

I am okay with Calatrava designs provided they are fairly tendered. And in a lot of cases I buy no name products at the grocery store when they are equal to the brand name equivalants.
To me the paper clip bridge is amazing regardless of who designed it.

I was at the VIP event tonight, and I was taken by surprise with this decision. I've learned why the building was chosen, which I didn't necessarily agree with; nevertheless, the design isn't terrible... but there were other, more inspiring, submissions out there.

You can't drop that and then leave without explaining.

Come on Muta, we need more than that! I'd love even the most simple explanation of why Allied got this over the others.

It's sad to say but I'm not the least bit surpirsed that Allied got the gig. Calgary and even Alberta for that matter, seems to always have great intentions but when it comes down to it, misses the mark. I must admit though, it is getting better.
Oh well. There are certainly worse alternatives, it just sucks to see what could have been.

Once again, design in Calgary is sacrificed for the easy, conservative "look".
Function over form continues to rule the roost when it comes to Calgary architecture.

I would imagine they were picked because they would be the easiest and smoothest to work with, not necessarily because their design was the best.

I must be blind, I dont see a picture of the bridge design that won. Just the architect and their proposal for a music centre.

Certainly not the most spectacular on the outside, but good materials would make it look really good.
For the inside, The SPF and the Allied Works ones were the two that were the most thought out, IMO. I don't think we are losing any interior quality with this choice.
Seeing the new night rendering of the outside has upped my opinion of the outside as well, not that I thought the outside looked bad.
The SPF was a sweet building though. Would have been a real landmark, IMO. But this building will still be a great addition to the city of Calgary.
For the variety of things Cantos does, the design of the interior was really important, and they figured that the Allied Works proposal met their goals the best.

Haha.. Yeah, this thread used to be about the bridge. Now it's about Cantos.

You mean decisions at City Hall are made via influence peddling and personal gain? Colour me shocked.

I'll make it short and sweet - Allied Works designed a building that apparently made best use of the physical manifestation / representation of 'music', their concept was visionary in this sense, etc. etc. I thought the others were just as strong, if not stronger in this regard.
I wasn't too impressed with Allied's use of the King Eddy; DS+F's use was far more impressive. It also seems that some alterations were made to Allied's design regarding the +15 and the rooftop portion of the King Eddy, but I could be wrong.
IMO, this was the most conservative conept out of all the shortlisted designs. Initially I had an issue with the way light would be allowed into the building; the concept reminded me of all the education / government buildings next to the river just north of City Hall.
After seeing some of the renderings, I'm warming up to the idea; but still, I preferred other submissions out there.
No discredit to Allied Works, though; they've done some beautiful stuff otherwise. If anyone has a chance, take a look at their website and check out their building portfolio.

City Hall didn't make the decision. It was Cantos Music Foundation.

Exterior material will make or break the design.
