Which is unfortunate that this bridge doesn't go across Memorial as well. It might be too complicated, but wouldn't it be great to have a triple-pronged bridge, so it can be utilized not only by those wanting to get into the East Village/Zoo, but also back and forth from all those new condos in the Bridges.

It's pretty integral to the East Village revitalization. Also connections across the Bow River are very poor in this area. I think the new bridge will really help unlock the potential of St. Patrick's Island, which is a sadly underutilized gem in the city. The East Village master plan shows some really, really interesting ideas for St. Patrick's Island - it could easily be just as good or even better than Prince's Island.
Table5 - I love the tags to the thread! ha ha.

Obviously, I've been smoking way too much crack. I thought this bridge was going to be traversing the Bow at the westernmost point of Prince's Island. Hence the crack about Druh Farrell.
I didn't even know that there was a St. Patrick's Island.

The Bridges is a few blocks to the east. There is a bridge at the LRT station directly adjacent to the Bridges development. Presumably people would walk down 9th street from within the Bridges, cross memorial at the LRT bridge then head west on the pathway to cross the river at the new bridge. You'll notice that there is no pedestrian access on the north side of memorial, so there would really be no place for the St. Patrick's bridge to land.

You probably know it better as St. George's Island, the one the zoo is on. For some reason the island has different names, depending on which part of it you find yourself on.

The island should be one of Calgary's best known places. But it is unfortunately so badly underutilized and neglected. Being so close to downtown, like I said, it could be a great urban park much like Prince's Island. The building of this bridge, the revitalization of East Village/Bridgeland and a major renovation of the park space itself will hopefully unlock this gem from obscurity. The East Village Master Plan, which was recently released, has some interesting ideas like creating a beach and swimming area (I think by slowing the flow of the river to the north of the island), an amphitheatre and othe programming space.

Or you can wait till some enterprising forumer on skyscraperpage.com puts up all the images themselves.

They all tend to feel like Calatrava rip-offs....not Peace Bridge Callatrava, but regular Callatrava. I think it's time to move on past that type of bridge...even if some vertical elements would be nice to have.
The one with the steps, "Glide" by SPF is my favorite so far as well.

I'm glad to see the strength of the Marc Boutin one and the two from Halcrow Yolles; definitely the best of the local architects and on par with the international designs. At the same time, there are a lot of local firms that I had really expected more from.

i can't believe some architects put their names on some of those submissions. amateur is too flattering for a lot of those designs.

I think the majority of these submissions do a better job of explaining why cities go out and hire a guy like Calatrava, than anyone of us who were arguing in that bridge thread ever could.

So true, someone should email some of these to Calatrava and express our apologies for people complaining that we gave him the first bridge.

Thanks, I did a google on them and a Calgary address was the first to pop up, so I just assumed they were Calgary-based.
