The seafood, dear lord, the seafood! I don't think enough Canadians know enough about the Maratimes or have been there. There is so much awesome scenery and places to go in Canada!

Drunk people with no jobs who leach off EI for 9 months of the year and cause the rest of us hard working Canadians to pay higher taxes.
I kid, I kid.

as far as seafood goes; if you are around a small town during lobster season, go to the local wharf and buy it straight from the boat. you normally save a few bucks and they couldn't be more fresh. i only buy my lobster off the boat when i'm back home.

Even better than that. Alot of fishermen have a cook shack right on the wharf and will cook your lobsters right there for you

this thread is mking me homesick - actually born and raised in Alberta, but spend 9 years in the Maritimes for university and consider it home now. I actually developed an accent while there.
wherever you go in the Maritimes, you'll enjoy the food and the people (and the booze, naturally) the most - Maritimers are the warmest and funniest people in the country, hands down. No pretense.
for the Haligonians in this thread, is the Granite Brewery in Henry House (corner of Barrington and South Street) still open? I'm craving a pint of Peculiar!

Thanks for all the ideas folks. In particular, can anyone suggest good places to stay in Halifax? It's neat that there are more B&Bs there than hotels
|
You'll be in Halifax the 13th? I'll just miss you. I'm going to be there the 10th for a wedding.
That being said, HD are you around to catch the game Friday night? It'll be the first time I would have seen my girlfriend in a month and a half but she's aware the Flames were here first.

Make sure you go to The Lower Deck in Halifax, great bands and great east coast spirit. Wreckhouse, Clam Chowder and Signal Hill, all great east coast bands.

Maritime Q-Scout, we're planning to be there from the 14th-18th
You have a very understanding girlffriend, I'm not sure mine will be as supportive when I tell her I want to catch the game on the 16th while we're on vacation

Alas I'll be back in Fredericton, but you need to take her on the town and show her a good ole fashioned drunken East Coast experience.
Start at Your Father's Moustache before the game, get the steak best in the city. Then go across the street to Oasis and watch the first. Then go down the street to Bubba Ray's, have some wings and watch the second. Then hot tail it across town to Boston Pizza, catch the thrid, celebrate at Split Crow acorss from BP. Then hit up The Lower Deck, Pogue Fado, Pacifico for class, the Palace for ass, the Liquor Dome (with three bars inside itself Dome, Cheers, and Attic) top it all off with Pizza Corner (one get a donair, the other get ASAP Pork on a Stick, trust me on those!)
Stagger back to your hotel, gamble away whatever you have left if you're at the Marriott Harbourfront, and voila. A drunken, hazey, East Coast time complete with Flames game!

^^That pretty much sums it up. I had a couple of those nights while at home visiting my brother last month. I haven't found a better party anywhere else in Canada then downtown Halifax on the weekend.
Did anyone mention the bars close at 4am?
I am trying to sell donairs up here in the Yukon at our restaurant but not a whole lot of luck.

Had no idea that our idea of "Donairs" started in Halifax. I'll be sure to pop by King of Donair
Is the Delta Halifax or the White Point Beach Resort any good? Near things to do?

The hell with it....
Skip the Maratime's and go to the real East Coast....
Newfoundland !!!!!
Go to Cape Spear and moon all of North America and then be the first to see the sunrise the next day.
Get the "Double Dark & Dirty" at Trapper John's on George Street & follow it up with a good feed of Fish & Chips from Ches's.
There's a really good Brewery in Quidi Vidi as well.....

wow, thanks to everyone who has made a suggestion, you have me re-thinking going to Halifax. As a born and raised westerner, I really had no idea that there was so much to see and do on the 'other side' of Canada. I have been as far east as Quebec City, but never to the maritimes. It really blows me away how proud the people from the Maritimes are of where they came from...When people ask me about Calgary, I kinda have the 'meh' attitude now, for me this city does not have the magic that it used to have. Maybe I am getting jaded and need to move away for awhile to appreciate the city once again.
So, thanks for the comments, and keep 'em coming..I see that there is a lot of interest beside myself on activities on the rock!!!!

Impossible not too!
Been a long time for me but I'm heading down there in the next month or so. What are the popular bars/pubs nowdays? In my day it was Smooth Hermans and the Keighley. Is steel city still open? what a popular pit that was, Sydneys version of Calgarys T&C minus the bikers.
