They sure tried hard. They matched the bid, but ultimately, Liverpool ended up with him. Benitez mentioned that having an English player helps greatly, due to the UEFA ruling that champions league squads have 6 domestic starters, and that's why he cost as much as he did.

It's been going on all summer so far. Rafa will not let those guys go without a ton of money going the other way, fortunately. I hope they don't go though....unless something huge comes the other way at some point (ie. Aguero?)

If the money is offered I'm not sure Rafa will have much say in who goes. The ownership situation isn't exactly liquid right now, if they call for a sale it's going to happen. I guess that's the same for most teams though.

£18 million? Is this kid really worth that kind of money?

Tuttomercatoweb is reporting that Liverpool is interested in Trezeguet, and Juventus has renewed its interest in Xabi Alonso after failing to come to an agreement with Udinese for Gaetano D'Agostino.

Speculation: Trezeguet + 15m for Xabi Alonso?

Edit: Gazzetta della Sport says Liverpool is interested in Christian Poulsen, again likely in a Xabi Alonso deal.

Well in reality, no one is worth that, but given the current market we tend to think of these gigantic transfer fees as normal.

I've never even heard of this kid, and that seems like quite the fee.

Benzema goes to Real Madrid! €35 million.

They keep on going! In Liverpool supporters book's Real must be coming close to matching Manchester United's spending this summer.

Anyone know a good site that lists which PL games we get in Canada this year?

??

Season is over. The new schedule wont be around for a while yet and Setanta is in Bankruptcy, so I doubt it.

The schedule is out for next year. Just haven't found any TV listings.

Also, Setanta's bankruptcy is not going to affect their Canadian broadcasts, although I've heard that Shaw is dropping them.

C'mon man, get with the program. Don't you know the season starts in 6 weeks?

ESPN bought the rights to Setanta's games = more games on TSN?

Late Saturday and Monday games.

Read the article I posted. Setanta is losing its rights in the U.S. and UK but still holds the Canadian rights.

So I read today that Man U is going to sign Owen. Really? Cheap and hey maybe he could recapture form on a good team but good grief. Can't Man U land anybody when they have scads of money to spend?

Official: Owen to United.

I don't know what to think of this; a former Liverpool great playing for that team. If you look at liverpoolfc.tv message board the die-hards there have some interesting things to say about it. It's not pretty.

Good for his career for sure. Little downside for the Mancs. Might turn out to be a great move by Slur Alex. Personally, Mikey is dead to me now....

edit: On a really happy note King Kenny, a true Liverpool legend, has rejoined the club in a couple of capacities.

Also, if you believe in such things. Owen leaves Liverpool for Madrid. Liverpool wins the Champions League. Owen snubs Liverpool for the barcodes, Liverpool win the FA Cup. Owen heads to the Mancs, Liverpool win the EPL! Hmm, that looks good.

Funnily enough Owen for all his great achievements for the club was never a true legend for the Reds in the eyes of the fans. Certainly not like Robbie Fowler or Steven Gerrard. Even Torres in his two years has become more of a legend at the club than little Mikey was in eight years. His going to Man U probably highlights why that is the case. Look at Tevez. He came out and stated that he would not join Liverpool out of respect for the United fans and he was just a bit part loan player! Classy move I thought.

I cant believe Owen did that personally. I always had a lot of respect for him.

And I think otherwise, I dont think this is good for his career at all, I think this is the final nail in the coffin for his career. Honestly, who is he going to displace for playing time on a roster that deep?
