My take on the red matter drilling plot hole: this guy's been drilling all his life. He doesn't know much else. His answer to every problem is drilling something. Yeah, he could just shoot the red matter at the planet, but it wouldn't involve drilling, so it's not a solution that's going to occur to him or appeal to him.

Star Trek hit $225 million domestic on Wednesday. Paramount hopes to hit $250 million domestic and $400 million worldwide. They may fall slightly short but the box office achievement of this great movie has been very impressive indeed. Especially its staying power.
