Just saw it and frankly, I hated this interpretation of Kirk. I wanted have punched him in the face repeatedly.
The spock, McCoy and even the sulu and scotty characters were well done, but if I wanted to see impressions, they could have hired rich little to do it.
I wasn't crazy about the plot, and since the Wrath of Khan they haven't really created anything but 2 dimensional bland villians.
It was ok, it was popcorn treak, but it doesn't rank anywhere near TWOK TSFS TVH and TUD.
In otherwards it was typical JJ Abrams, it was pretty, it was shakey and it covered up its weaknesses very well.
Maybe the hype was to much and I expected to much.

this episode cemented in my mind that Sisko was the most badass captain in any of the Star Trek series. the intelligence and reasoning of Picard, the take no **** approach of Kirk, and having a black captain was just plain cool.
At least with Sisko, when he went to fight someone hand to hand it was convincing. I hate to stereotype, but in a room full of Klingons I'd put my money on Angry Black Man vs Kirk-Fu vs Shakespeare vs Elbow-to-the-Gut Janeway.
On a separate note, can anyone explain to me how Kirk, fresh out of the Academy as presumably an Ensign, ends up in command of a starship so quickly? Surely there's a few Lieutenants through Commanders on the flagship of the fleet that would have stepped in? They can't all be enlisted...

You know I liked the original Kirks flying drop kick. Captain Archer would sic his stupid dog on his enemy.

It has happened but only when the whole command crew has been killed.
There was a court marshall of a young medical officer(who had a rank equivalent of 2nd lieutenant) who during a ship battle in the 17 or 18 hundreds took his wounded captain down to give him medical aid during a ship to ship battle. The rest of the officers were killed and command fell to him, and he was actually charged and tried because he was unknowingly in command of the ship when it was surrendered.
But I thought it was a stupid piece of writing to put him in Command, especially on a major combat vessel like the Enterprise. (From what I understand, Ensign isn't even really a command rank. Its equivalent to a trainee at Macdonalds)
An ensign could end up in Command of a shuttle if the officer in charge and only other member of the crew was killed, but nothing like a ship where pretty much every officer outranks him.
It was weak they could have promoted him in the next movie.

Except the Captain can leave whomever he wants in charge in whatever order regardless of rank. Dumb move, but not without its merits.
So far, Kirk managed to smuggle himself on board, contract a mad disease, and still save the ship from coming out of warp into certain death, big hands and all.
Captain was impressed, and leaves Spock in charge, and Kirk "second in command."
Maybe it was bad writing for a movie, but maybe not so unrealistic in what might be a starfleet scenario.
Absolutely. What are you, some kind of Romulan apologist? To hell with them. They had a good run.
No doubt! You know the only reason they invented Romulans was because they were too cheap to make up new costumes, so they just mished mashed Klingon clothing with Vulcan ears
Star Trek remains very successful at the box office. This weekend it has shrugged off Terminator, Drag Me To Hell, and Angels & Demons to grasp the #5 spot on the weekend despite all three of those movies coming out after Star Trek.
Star Trek also had the smallest drop in box office receipts weekend-to-weekend, only losing 33% from its 4th to 5th weekend.

I think for all those who are comparing this to the old star treks, we need to remember this is a reboot intended to attract a new audience. The old hardcore audience is no longer the group that will earn the big bucks, the last couple star trek movies are evidence of that.
It worked on me and my wife, it was definitely an enjoyable movie experience. I personally welcome another explosion-fest with a star trek theme.
Yeah I finally got to see it yesterday too, was very impressed.
Some problems in the dialog, whoever wrote the lines for old Spock was trying too much for fan service, and it was painful to see how poorly acted it was.
But overall very successful reboot IMO, look forward to more.

I saw it on the weekend as well and liked it a lot.
I was left wondering how many times Kirk could get his clock cleaned and not have a concussion, or how many times he could jump from an extreme height and land on steel girders without cracking at least one rib. After a while, it got ridiculous.
I also was wondering how monster carnivores could evolve and survive on icy, apparently barren planets where the only prey appears to be an occasional bumbling human.
I also wondered why it is, in the Star Trek universe, across many series and movies, that cave floors are mysteriously flat, like your kitchen floor.
Or how one would know the coordinates of a starship travelling hundreds of times the speed of light so one could transport to said starship . . . . . particularly when said starship dumped you off on a barren planet and didn't exactly tell you how fast they were going to where they were going. Lucky guess?
Everyone knows Spock's first love was the farm girl on the irradiated planet . . . . . but I would have dumped her for Uhura too.
Spock's mother is blond!!! You couldn't find a blond?!!!
Swallowing a certain planet really does need an "alternative time line" plot device because it renders the original series, all subsequent series and other movies as lost in space. It would not surprise me to see that certain planet restored to life in this time line by some other plot device in a future movie.
Overall though, this Trek movie makes up for all the other virtually unwatchable, ponderous movies this dying franchise had been putting out in the last decade or more.
Great flick but, more importantly, probably gives subsequent movies a lot of hope.

Yeah, but its a space opera, so I could live with it. It was nowhere near as bad as some of the sequences from movies like Indiana Jones.

Same could be said for the Ice World of Hoth.

Um...Spock and Kirk argued about whether to meet up with the fleet or go after Nero before he ejected him. With his super genius and old Spock's help I'm sure they could have figured that one out.

What are you saying about Indy man, don't make me throw down with you.

Except that there was native life on that planet, we saw the Tauntauns, and while they smelled worse on the inside, they were probably chock full of the nutritional value required by a growing ice monster

Out of all of the movie franchises, Trek abuses the whole concept of Deux ex Machina more then anyone else. They flog that puppy like a 12 year old watching a porn movie.
The whole reboot of the franchise was probably written in crayon on a napkin as the easiest way to make everything about the original vanish.
