I really am indifferent to tattoos. I don't judge someone on what they've got on they're body. A good looking girl is still good looking, tattoos or not. I just thought it kinda summed up most peoples thoughts on tattoos.

Hotties are different but how about in the professional work field? I know many of them 'judge' people based on looks also. Would you judge a Co-worker differently with the many different tats? I know I would - I know... I'm shallow and not a good person.

I had/have a couple piercings and I thought they would be "temporary". But they aren't - I still have a hole from the belly button ring and I doubt my nose ring hole will ever close up (though I still wear that piercing). I have a scar on my tongue but nobody ever sees that except my dentist.

After a certain period of time the body piercings do become permanent, just like piercing your ears.
Yeah, I definitely learned the hard way that piercings aren't really temporary. I got my eyebrow pierced when I was in junior high, thinking that if and when I wanted to take it out the hole would grow over no problem. A few years later I finally came to my senses and took it out... but the hole definitely did not grow over. I still have a fairly obvious hole right under my eyebrow.

Its probably because of that that I haven't got any tattoos. Just because I like something, doesn't mean I am going to like it in a few years. I liked my eyebrow piercing when I was in junior high, but when I hit high school I hated it. Now I have a silly hole on my face many years later to remind me. I'm not completely ruling out ever getting a tattoo, but its something I would have to put a lot of thought into. And I'd probably put it somewhere that I wouldn't have to stare at it in the mirror every day if I suddenly decided I hated it.

I don't really have any problems with people who decide to get tattoos, to each their own. I don't really consider a tattoo a determining factor in what I think about someone. I'm actually surprised at how worked up people are getting in this thread over the issue... who cares if someone else has tattoos? Its their body. They aren't tying you down and forcing you to get one too.

I work in the construction industry. If I judged everyone who had a tattoo, I wouldn't have many friends.

I'm in the, "I'm not getting a tatoo but people are free to do whatever they want camp." Of course the one point I'd like to make is that what comes with the freedom to do whatever you want vis-a-vis tatooing, comes the responsibility to put up with the fact that other people are free to base judgements on you (just like everything else you do in life). They may be right or wrong about their judgements about you because of your tatoo, but that's life, you put it out there for all to see.

As for me and my judgements with tatoos:

It's a definate con point for a potential girlfriend. I just simply don't find them attractive. Not saying I wouldn't date a girl with a tatoo (s), but just that I wouldn't like the tats.

Also I would never hire someone who had visable tatoos while wearing office attire. So in other words no face, neck, or hand tatoos. My message for them is: Should have thought ahead that one-day you might want to do something with your life that might not be best served with tats all over your body. (exception being women who have ankle tatoos that might show in the summer when they're wearing skirts to the office.)

I was in Bow Cycle with my 3 year old last week. I don't know how many of you are familiar with the story "The Owl and the cat", but it's one of my son's favourite books.

In walks a guy with one of those huge ridiculous looking nose rings, like you see on bulls in cartoons, etc. "Daddy, look! A ring at the end of this nose, his nose, a ring at the end of his nose!" I laughed pretty loud. Too bad the guy didn't hear it as well.

I've never wanted a tatoo, but I certainly don't begrudge anyone who does.

As for the ladies, the larger and more visible it is the less I would (presumably) like it, but that's an awful small part of who someone is.

I can understand that point of view (with the neck and hand tattoos). However any good tattoo artist wouldn't/shouldn't tattoo a neck or hand unless it was a person who already had a lot of tattoo work (I've seen a guy get rejected for this exact reason while I was getting my arm worked on).

For my job I occasionally have to speak with the public (I work in gov't). I keep my tattoos hidden, (the reason I only got a 3/4 sleeve), and I take my piercings out, except for my ears (yes I have tunnels in my ears). It really has no impact on my abilities.

So with the public I can understand, doesn't make it right, but obviously I can see that point of view.

For myself, if the person is not dealing with public a neck tattoo wouldn't really deter me from hiring someone if they were very qualified.

Like I've said before I work in a very professional setting. There is actually a person in my office with a small tattoo in one of the areas mentioned above, and its been fine. A good qualified worker is tough to come by.

I actually know a couple of girls who have really stupid tats. They look nice now but in 10 or 20 years it'll look ######ed. They really like them tho so I don't have the heart to tell them how stupid they are.

Oh man... I am the biggest idiot ever. I ran into a good old friend of mine, who I don't see very often, at a BBQ a couple years ago. Hadn't seen her in months and months and so she was excited to do a little catching up. The topic was on her latest and greatest achievements, when she proudly showed me her new tattoo.

Now, let me make it perfectly clear that I know sweet F-A about astrology. I know that I'm a libra, and that a libra's symbol is a tri-beam scale. That's it.
So she shows me her tattoo and it's a crab on her lower belly. I blurt out "WTF? You got crabs?". I swear to god she gave me a look that still makes me cringe. Something inbetween verge of tears, anger, and a sudden realization that alot of people are going to have the same reaction as me.
Anyway, she clarified that it was an astrology thing, but I wasn't paying much attention, I was too busy formulating my apology in my head.

Laugh. Nice one. That's probably a better reaction than a furrowed brow and saying "you got a effing astrology tattoo?" which is what some people might say.

*pre-emptive "sorry" to anyone with an astrology-related tattoo.
