I will be severely disappointed if there is no lathe making.

Star Trek was founded on the principle that a rudimentary lathe can be fashioned out of pretty much anything.

I have yet to be able to go to a remote desert region and have the ability to build a rudimentary bazooka while creating gunpowder.

Saw the movie last night. I thought it was, as a lot of people have been saying, a VERY well done summer blockbuster. Slick production values, non-stop action, top-notch casting (though I'm less jazzed about Pine as Kirk).

But my biggest thing is that Star Trek - for me, anyway - has never been about all that. The explosions, monsters and cowboys in space have always been the domain of Star Wars. What I have always appreciated about the Star Trek franchise has been its attempt(s) (which aren't necessarily always successful) to grapple with more complex thematic issues: its use of subtext and metaphor to offer social commentary. As problematic (and/or heavy-handed) as these messages often are, Star Trek at least attempts to situated itself within a long tradition of social commentary in "pure" SF.

This isn't to say I don't appreciate the place and the market for the type of film this Star Trek is - as I said I enjoyed the film immensely - but I would have appreciated a few less explosions and a bit more complexity.

Anyway, that's just me. I will say I am VERY happy that this film is going to be successful and breathe new life into the franchise - this Star Trek is certainly better than no Star Trek.

First off, I really enjoyed Star Trek, it is this year's The Dark Knight (regardless of how much money it makes). Fun, exciting, emotional, great story, great acting...etc.

But, I have to agree that DA's statement applies to a lot Hollywood summer movies. So many movies out there seem like they are based on special effects, while lacking in great story telling.

Sure, I agree that the occasional speaker blowing, visual overloaded movie is fun. I have always said that NO movie needs to be seen on the big screen. If a movie needs a 30 foot screen or super surround sound for you to enjoy it, then it probably does not have a good story.

I use Pixar films as a great example to my theory. Yes, there is a lot to see and hear...and a theater setting is a great place to see it. But, sitting at home and watching a Pixar film is just as enjoyable, if not more, because they have GREAT STORY TELLING!

Matrix 1, good story and SFX. Matrix 2 & 3, good SFX, but wtf happened to the story?

The good summer movies have a balance of story telling, special effects, an other elements. Star Trek is a good summer movie.

Hey, if you are just driving to work everyday...you do not need a H2 with 24" wheels, a Toyota Camry will get you there just fine.

"Star Trek" beamed itself up to the top of the box office, earning US$76.5 million in its opening weekend.

Paramount Pictures had estimated that the movie would make about $50 million for the weekend, but figured that strong reviews helped carry it to the bigger opening.
The studio said director J.J. Abrams' reboot of the beloved sci-fi franchise made $4 million just in pre-midnight screenings Thursday - plus a record $8.2 million in IMAX showings.
"Star Trek," which reveals the back stories of Capt. Kirk, Mr. Spock and the rest of the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise, received 96 per cent positive reviews on the Rotten Tomatoes website.

Great news! Surpassed expectations by 50%.

The big questions now are:

What are the actuals for this weekend? Above or below $76.5 million?

-AND-

How much does it drop in its 2nd weekend?

Either way, Star Trek will easily surpass all of its predecessors at the box office.

I'm trying to convince some people to go see it with me. Apparently, they'd rather treat their mothers to a nice dinner/night out.

Ridiculous!

If you have to, go by yourself. It is that good.

Plus, I decided to take my mom to go see it today. (My 2nd time seeing it)

P.S. Don't worry, I also got my mom flowers and other presents.

Absolutely awesome job they did on this movie. Really enjoyed it and I think they found the right formula to attract a wider audience and keep their fanbase happy.

Don't know if anyone else caught this but Pine, Quinto & Nimoy were all on SNL's Weeken Update last night joking about how the uber-Trekkies were panning the film for being "too watchable"....tried to find it on YouTube but it's not up yet. You could get it from NBC.com if you're lucky enough to live in the States but for some odd reason the GlobalTV website has a broken link to it.....*irritating*!

(Also Timberlake was the guest host and he & Samberg made another hilarious short to follow up on D*** In A Box and it was excellent!)

Thoroughly enjoyed it. The audience applauded at the end, which has never happened in a movie I've been too.

Of course, the success and the fact that most people like it will make it a bad movie to a lot of people.

It was well worth the $7 and that's all that really matters to me.
