Reports 3 weeks ago was that
Buick, Saturn, Humemr, and Pontiac would all be shut down.
And they would would end up with Chevrolet, Cadillac, with GM being rebranded into Chevrolet

I never understood why car companies want so many different brand names anyway. I know that alot of it comes from mergers and takeovers, but why not gently kill off the names and conglomerate into a couple different names? Like Honda-Acura, Toyota-Lexus, Nissan-Infiniti.
GM should just have GMC for their trucks, Chev for their cars and Cadillac for their high end vehicles.
Ford already has too much brand recognition to change up their system of selling vehicles. But then again, they only have Ford, Mercury and Lincoln. Mercury is redundant. They're all just rebadged Fords.
Ditto Chrysler. Why do they sell all their Chrysler cars and minivans with two different names (Dodge)? They could just keep Dodge as their truck line, Chrysler as their car line and Jeep as their niche line.

How many brands are under the GM label? Olds, Pontiac, GMC, Chev, Buick, Saturn... Just way too many. Now they're going to have a big problem with their dealers. Killing off a brand means that a dealer just lost a big chunk of their business. And they can't just let them start selling Chevs in place of the lost Pontiac line. The other dealers in the area sould go ballistic. What would happen in the case of Northlands Pontiac Buick GMC and Shaganappi Chev Olds? Two dealers side by side, both selling the same thing with different names.

Well I doubt people who buy GMC trucks would care that much if they were called Chevy Trucks. Point is they should be selling the trucks under one name brand too...if they want to call it GMC than let them. By calling it Chevy though I think they could save a few administrative costs but merge the GMC and Chevy Truck design people into one department. Again...no other automaker in North America is trying to make the bulk of their trucks under a brand name different from their car Divsion so that tells me....it's not a good idea.

my grandfather is spinning in his grave. He was a GM dealer a long time ago. Loved his Pontiacs. My Dad's first car was a Pontiac. So many good cars early on.... GTO, Firebird/Trans-Am, Bonnyville, early Grand Ams/Grand Prixs....

Great news. Hopefully they will keep the G8 and brand it as a Chevy. The ugly Pontiac front end ruins that car for me.

My sister recently had a Pontian Grand Am, for about 2 years and then she could not take it any longer. When it was finally fixed and working, she sold it and bought a Toyota Corolla.
Between the Grand Am continually needing service work and the inept service work she actually received from the dealership, it got to the point of being so bad we were actually laughing already.

A good friend of mine had her head gasket go on her Grand AM GT at 70,000 k's. It was known defect and the dealership wouldn't do squat about it. She sold it and bought a Mazda6.
