You only need the paypal account if you want to pay applications. I do like the app store, and have a few downloaded. I am disappointed though that some of these apps crush your data plan. Also not thrilled with the Bloomberg app today; my stocks wouldn't update all day.

As I understand it, it's basically like the App Store on iTunes?

Well I don't know exactly what the deal is, but I was screwing around with a couple of the apps and then I got a warning that I was at 100% of my data plan and literally within the next 5 seconds I got a message that I was over by $20.
I'm far from a techie guy and don't really know what "counts" and what doesn't. But I was less than impressed at that point. I just assumed it has something to do with the lack of Wifi?

How big is your data plan?
I know these apps use more data.. but unless you are tethering you probably shouldn't be reaching your data plan capacity.

I don't have a 3G blackberry (just a Pearl) so my data plan is only around 2.5 megs or something stupid. More than enough for email and what not but definitely not enough for the store. I wouldn't suggest using this app store unless you want to have huge monthly bills. It is meant for people with 3G phones/plans.

I can't recall how much data I get, but I never really had an issue until this. I go through rogers and I know its not unlimited...but still kind of sucks that within the first day I got a notification that I was $20 over.
Whats tethering btw?

Tethering is where you hook up your Blackberry to your laptop and use it as a mobile internet connection. It uses up a lot more data...
I've never actually done it so I don't really have anymore info then that.

No I'm just pure OCD when it comes to some stocks that I want to follow and just because the app is new to me I just like to check it alot and play around with it. Otherwise thats about it.

Slava, what Blackberry do you have? If you're not on a 3G plan with Rogers downloading one or two of those apps would destroy your monthly data.

Doesn't really matter whether its 3G or not.. depends what he has for a data plan.
Most of the plans are at least 500 mb.
I have an 8900 (not 3G) and I use lots of data and have still never even come close to hitting 100 mb.

The $15 Blackberry data plan is 2MB. If he has that it could be the problem.
The $25 plan is 500MB.

I'm going to have to take a look. I thought that it was the biggest data plan you could get through rogers, but evidently that doesn't seem to be the case.
I might just suck it up for a few months and get the new iPhone when it comes out. The apps are a lot cooler on there from what I've seen and with the WiFi usage it seems like I would be saving some money there.
In the meantime though I will likely just pay too much for the balckberry apps!

I'm happy with it. I've owned a BB for a couple of years now, and have been very frustrated with how behind the BB has been compared to the iphone. I mean, it's taken them this long to get a quality mobile application store? And only this year they've upgraded their e-mail app to view HTML? Did anybody ever see their old mobile application store? You would think that the company that invented the BB could at least make a professional looking mobile site...so overall I'm happy with the progress RIM has made with this store.
There still needs to be a lot more apps to be on the same level as the iphone however....but at least it's a step in the right direction. Now, just to get the ability to upgrade the system software with a Mac...maybe I'm dreaming.
