The Howard shot was amazing, but I'm still not sure why Sask didn't just throw a third rock into the back 8 foot forcing Howard to try to find a triple to score. Not sure what he was trying to guard against.

I went on Sunday and it was so boring. I left after an hour. Was I missing something?

If you're like me no, you're not. I remember last time The Brier was here and we went. I enjoy curling but I realized I enjoy it WITH the commentators and the overhead camera. The cameras make the angles way easier to see and the commentators will explain why they are playing a particular shot instead of a different shot.
I found it a real snoozer in person. I think it's about the only sport better on TV than live...poker too if you include that as a sport.
Howard's shot last night was outstanding. One of the top shots I've ever seen.

x2, great shot but IMO ######ed shot choice by sask. Guess there's a reason they're down at the bottem of the standings though.

Great shot my Minard, strange he just didnt go for the easier take out. Must either be an ego or a confidence thing because you would think the takeout is the easier shot.

yeah, but any roll and it's over. at that level, skips should have t-line weight in their back pocket, just have to ice it right. sweepers have more control of a draw.

Menard is like that. In the afternoon draw he was up 5-4 with the opponent lying 2. He could have played the easy shot to take out 1 stone and go to an extra end. Instead he played a do-or-die shot through a tiny little port to play the double and win. He's made 2 life-saving shots already.

Just from when I play, I prefer the take out, I prefer the weight control so that you dont get a cheap nick on the ice that can ruin a draw. Also he had a lot of wiggle room.

Wow. What a first end. All rocks in play. Martin made an error on his first rock though and Howard steals in the first end again!

I asked this in the random thoughts thread, but didn't get an answer, so I'll ask here.
How do you know the difference between an inturn and and outturn? I curled for a year when I was a teenager, but never knew the difference.
Also, when you are sweeping, you are basically melting the pebbles so the rock doesn't curl, right? So by the end of a game, how come the ice still has curl to it? I figured all the sweeping would have worn the pebbles down so much that the curl would be gone. Can anyone shed some light for me?
Edit- Another question. How strict are they on the hog line? Because it seems that the guys often slightly hold onto the rock too long, although it's pretty hard to tell on TV.

I only know the answer to the first one.
If you're right handed...
Turning the rock counter-clockwise is out-turn and clockwise is in-turn.

1. The in-turn is when you are curling towards the center line, and an out-turn is when you are curling away from it.
2. I've read a few things in the sweeping...so maybe I just won't attempt that. Its something about reducing thr friction though. Maybe melting the ice a little. That is why it keens up as you play.
3. They are strict. The rocks have electronic sensors, and if you look closely you can see the little green lights on the rocks that tell you the player let go of the stone in time.

I think I answered this the other time you posted the question, but I'll post it again: when you sweep, you're just taking the tiniest amount off the pebbles, but what you are doing is creating a thin layer of water between the ice and the stone, which reduces friction, and makes the rock run faster and curl less. This water freezes again in just a few seconds. It generally takes many ends before the pebbles really start to wear down.

Sorry man, I didn't see your response. Thanks for answering a second time.
Edit- I just went and saw that you answered directly after I posted the question.

Not quite.
Outturn - Stick your throwing arm straight out to the side. Swing it towards straight in front of you...making it curl that way is the out turn.
Inturn - Stick your throwing arm across your body to the other side. Swing it away towards straight in front of you...making it curl that way is the in turn.
Does that make sense?
