Default Ladies in the back.

This might have been brought up before but I couldn't find it in a search.

Why do some some couples have the men drive and women sit in the back, even though the passenger seat is available?

I'm sure it's a cultural thing but I was hoping to get an explanation about the reasoning behind it.

Anyone on here have parents, relatives or friends that do this?

Isn't it the vehicular equivalent where the women has to walk a few steps behind the man in the same cultures?

That'd be the "ladies in the rear" thread. Just a bit different.

Women get carsick more often than man, so they will sit in the back to prevent carsickness.

Isn't that the exact opposite of what you should be doing if you feel carsick?

It's obvious that they're back seat drivers.

But...you get carsick because your eyes and your balance centre (inner ear) are giving you conflicting information on your spatial location and how you're moving, and your brain can't figure it out. The better the view of the horizon, the easier it becomes for your brain to sort through the information, and the less carsick you get.

Most people who get carsick in the back will not get carsick in the front, or if they're driving. In fact, my dad (physician) will recommend a patient try sitting in the front seat for carsickness, before he'll prescribe anything.

In some cases, there is a baby or other small being in the back that needs tending to. And I know there are some people who sit in the back because they're scared the airbags will kill them if they deploy (which, if they're short or have a small build, may be true in some cases)

Really? I've seen it with some asian cultures (or I guess families) and what I would assume are muslims.

Some other cultures as well which I would not feel sure enough to offer a guess as to what they are.

Like I said, I think it's the equivalent of walking behind the men if you were on a street. But you're in a car instead.

Or maybe the guys just have bad gas.

(Haha, come to think of it, maybe behind them wouldn't be the best choice then)

Do they also have a baby or kids in the back? I see women sit in the back all the time with their kids.
