I lived in Prince George, and during the summer it is not a bad place to live. The smell of pulp sucks, but it only takes a few days before you stop smelling it (scary I guess). I had a few trips to Ft. St. James to visit a girlfriend while I was living in PG, and really it was a nasty place to visit. Many people have said that my hometown of Chetwynd is not the greatest place to live, although the area around Chetwynd is not so bad, its the locals that make it an unpleasant experience (don't go to the Cabaret Nightclub if you are a tree planter).
Ft. Nelson is certainly no screaming hell, but I have really only been there in the winter to play hockey, and with 4 hours of daylight and highs of minus thirty may have put a damper on my perspective.
Surrey is not all that bad (although when I lived in Vancouver, Surrey girl jokes were all the rage). I seem to remember Cloverdale was the dump to avoid.
And East Vancouver is by far the worst place in Canada, west of Toronto. Edmonton does not even come close in terms of being a cesspool of human filth.
