^Thigpin can run and he is tough as nails too (anything looks tough after Brodie Croyle, not that Brodie wasn't tough, he just wasn't durable). Cassell was a bench warmer in college and he would have been a bench warmer in the NFL if it wasn't for Brady's injury. I stated before, it is a lot easier to take the reins of a 16-0 championship caliber team than it is to take the reins of a 2-14 team. Especially if you have to learn a new system with different skill players than you are used to.

I thought I read somewhere that if New England slapped the Franchise Tag on Cassell. They would have to pay him $14 million for next season. That sounds outrageous for a backup QB. If I was Matt Cassell, I would send a nice fruit basket or something over to Bernard Pollard's house.

49ers interviewed Broncos OC, Rick Dennison.

Now that sounds like a good fit, although I know Shanahan did a lot of work with the Broncos offense.

Dis, where was the division of labour between Dennison and Shanahan?

As I understand it, DFF could correct me if I'm wrong, Dennison was allowed to decide which colors to use for the X's and O's in the playbook.

Not sure. Dennison has served in a wide range of coaching roles since his playing days ended. When Kubiak left Dennison took over as OC/offensive line coach. I think it's safe to say that he didn't have the control that Kubiak had, but I could be totally out to lunch on that. I'm pretty sure that QB's coach Jeremy Bates did most of the play calling.

Interestingly, to me anyway, Dennison is a native of Kalispell, MT as am I!

Playing against a butter soft schedule, on a team with a good line, great WR's, supposedly great coaching and a system that he was very comfortable with he was already worse than Ryan, so it is very easy to see how he could be worse in a situation that is not nice and cushy like last season was.

As a fan of the Lions that haven't had a decent QB in my lifetime I wouldn't take Cassel if he signed for the league minimum.

Syl compares him to Scott Mitchell, I would say that is his upside, he has a much better possibility to be even worse.

Report: Cowboys talking about releasing Owens
http://www.tsn.ca/nfl/story/?id=2632...headlines_main

Quote:
ESPN reports that Dallas Cowboys coach Wade Phillips and owner Jerry Jones will discuss releasing wide receiver Terrell Owens as the team looks to improve its locker room chemistry.
I am a fan of TO and the Cowboys, so I might be biased but there is no question this guy is great on the football field. I understand you want chemistry on your team and want all your players to gel together but this sounds very dumb on the Cowboys part. You release him, you still have the cap hit, and you loose your best receiver. Just doesn't really make too much sense.

Any team should feel free to sign TO.

Just make sure it is a 1 year contract, or be sure you can cut him after a year.

I think it makes perfect sense. He's a 35 year-old receiver on the downswing of his career who doesn't get along QBs (Romo, McNabb, Garcia), was very critical of his OC this year, and has questionable relationships with other offensive performers on the team (Witten, Williams, Barber, etc.). It's simply not a formula for a winning football team, and this was clearly evident in the Cowboys' December collapse.

And it's not like the Cowboys don't have other playmakers that can step up -- as bad as the Roy Williams trade looks now, he's a a #1 receiver and under contract for a long time to come....

Saints hire Gregg Williams as DC. Very excited about this move, the guy's been behind 5 top 10 defences the past 9 years.

Big move towards getting the D fixed, that offence is way too talented to be watching the play-offs on TV the past two years.

This isn't really news, but worth posting nonetheless. I just heard on the Dan Patrick show that Brad Johnson named his son Maximus. Maximus Johnson. That's legendary.

Williams is a free agent. I can almost promise you he won't be back. I don't think the Cowboys do it. Romo is not a good quarterback and he's going to get exposed as the overrated fraud that he is with Crayton, Hurd, and Austin as his go to receivers.

5 year extension right after the robbery trade to get him.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3643295

5 yr - $45 million, $20 million guaranteed.

The only reason why Romo has had good numbers was because Owens was catching his balls. Witten had good numbers because Owens was drawing double coverage (of course he is very talented in his own right as well). However, the importance of a WR > TE.

No question that T.O. is the most talented receiver on the team regardless of his age. AaronSJ, did you watch Roy Williams play? He was pretty close to terrible this season.

When things in Dallas were great, there was nary a whisper of T.O.'s distractions. Now that they had an abysmal back end of the season, he's all of a sudden the whipping boy again.

Jerry Jones is an idiot and Romo just ain't that good.

But it is always that way with T.O.

He is like the great multiplier - when things are going good, they are going great. When things are going bad, they make the Korean Parliament seem like Sunday tea. But it is way easier for things to go wrong, and when bad things are said it is pretty tough to undo that sort of damage.

Is T.O. a great talent? Absolutely.
But T.O. has a short shelf life and only makes the players around him better for a short time. Then he is a cancer to the team and even his great skills can't make up for the damage he does to the team concept.

That what made the trade less stupid on the Cowboys part. But his play after he was acquired made it look like highway robbery by the worst team in NFL history.

I personally dont see how his career is going down, he is physically fit enough to play at a very high level. Roy Williams looked awful this year, I thought Crayton was a WAY better number 2 receiver. It doesnt make too much sense to offer this guy an extension and not realize that his ego will always be there.

He was neutralized by a number of teams this year. He only had two really good games this year.

Those types of things can be speculated upon, but hardly proven with respect to the effect on the on-field product. Did T.O. really cause the Cowboys to be absolutely disgraced against the Eagles?

There are too many variables involved; one can't simply point the finger at a single convenient player and blame them for a team's ills.
