I must be the biggest fool in the world, but I just quit my job last week, and will be starting my own business in the new year.

Unions inhibit the free market. Your example doesn't.

I burnt a couple of "LAYOFF" disks on my last day before the holidays of all of my drawings, designs, management reports etc. for a portfolio if required. As an EIT I am considered "cheap labour" being able to do what many older, higher paid designers can do I should be safe for a couple of rounds. Having said that, you would be stupid not to be able to apply tomorrow if you are laid off today kind of a thing.

I'm lucky enough to be a pretty valuable resource within my company, but if I was hit, I'm pretty thankful that my family is doing well. I'd probably end up starting a tab with the parents. I hate taking money from them though.

I'm going to try and prevent losing my job by doing my part to spur the economy with excessive spending.
I plan to:
Continue with all trips as planned.
Buy a new TV/HD box on boxing day.
Buy a new DH bike for the next race season.
Buy new Snowboard boots.
Replace the rotors, pads, tire rod ends & track bar bushings on my truck.
Open a line of credit to temporarily pay for everything.
Complain on CP after I get laid off and have accumulated a censored load of debt when all along I thought I was doing the economy a favour by spending money!

You could always ask Harper for a bailout--you just might get it.

I would be very careful of doing that. It is entirely possible for IT (depending if your IT group is half decent) to note file transfers to individual computers and have them come after you for theft of intellectual property if you go to a competitor. That's up to the company's discretion but know that you're probably not doing it without anyone knowing.
