Why the Dion tape was late.....

Quote:

The timeline (all times ET):
  • 6:15-6:30 - The Liberal miss their promised deadline to deliver Dion's statement to the television networks.
  • 6:40 - Liberal arrive with a single tape at the press gallery in Ottawa. They were supposed to deliver two tapes, one in French, one in English. They arrived with a single tape in DVD-minicam format, which is not a broadcast quality format.
  • Shortly after 6:40 - The Liberals decide to run back to their offices -- a block away -- because the French portion of the tape needs another edit.
  • 7:05 - Liberal staffers were still in their offices as the networks went to air with the Harper address.
  • 7:07 - Harper's statement finishes and network anchors are forced to kill time as they wait for Dion's address.
  • 7:10 to 7:15 - Liberal staffers arrive back at the press gallery on Wellington Street with a DVD-minicam player that they had taken from their own offices, along with the associated cables. There is still only one tape, not two. A press gallery official tells the Liberals that the gallery is not the feed point and an argument ensues. The Liberals ask why they weren't told that earlier. The feed point is next door at the CBC building, which is the long-established feed play point for all network pools. The Liberals are informed that they need to be walked into the building by authorized staff.
  • 7:20 - English network anchors are still live on television, wondering where the tape is. CTV has still had no communications from the Liberals about Dion's address.
  • Approximately 7:15 - CBC receives tape and begins dubbing into French and English versions. This takes about 10 minutes.
  • 7:28 - CTV decides to go off-air and back to regular scheduled programming at 7:30. CTV has still not seen a feed of the tape.
  • 7:28 - CBC incorrectly punches out the finished feed only to their network.
  • 7:30 - CTV signs off broadcast at scheduled time.

You would have to be either 80 or so rednecked you think it's 1963 and the Ruskies are about to fly over Baffin Island with their MiGs and AK-47s to take away your apple pie and Pat Boone records.
The Ruskies would have flown over from the other direction, what's wrong with apple pie and who's Pat Boone? And thanks for calling me old and/or a flaming redneck.

Personally, I think it's a sign that the Coalition is on the wrong track if the communist party supports them, and that has nothing to do with Cold War diplomacy.

This whole thing is so unbelievable. Truly not just part of canadian history but most certainly part of CP lore.

I have spent the better part on the last 5 hours explaining to the blond ( my wife for those that are unfamiliar with the term and why it is used) on how the parliamentary system works and then what has happened for the last 5 days.

Now...she is a true Liberal (Democrat in name only) as anyone I know and I love her for her convictions though I rarely agree with her on anything political.

Now, once she was able to comprehend and be a bit analyitical as to how the system worked she started asking questions. She was quick to say that she was sure she didn't like Harper, but was able to put that aside as to the real issues at hand. Predictable as well as commendable.

Once we had completed the overall of the inner workings, her first question to me was a simple one...

"Since the coalition determined that your Conservatives were not working quick enough to deal with a financial crisis that is a world wide problem (words to that effect anyhow) what is the liberal plan?"

I said in all honesty..."we dont know because they really haven't told anyone either, except to say they have to see the government books before they tell us"

She looked at me with her big ole blue eyes and said.. "then what is the case for taking away the power from your Conservatives and giving it to those guys from Quebec?"

I just looked at her and smiled and said " honey, I have no answer for that other than what the leaders of the coalition said the other day on TV ( I replayed it on computer..as well as the Dion/harper exchange yesterday) and as you saw and as they said, its because its in the best interests of Canada".

Literally there was like 30-40 seconds of silence while she stared at me with a burrowed frow and stated... "this sounds like they dont like that they weren't elected and are trying to take the election away from the actual results like Bush did in 2000". I just snickered and said...yep thats what it seems like.

her response after that was awesome...

" Well then you need to call someone up there (she is still fuzzy on the GG position and responsiblity) and tell them that this should never happen in a truly free country ( referenced 20000 one more time) and that if it does, no real liberal or Socialist ( her term for dippers based on their agenda) should agree to it and if need be, protests have to be the order of the day until it stops...and I am calling your mother to tell her the same thing".

Obviously a lot of this stuff is paraphrased as there was cooking dinner and eating and clean up involved during the whole thing as well as some other distractions, but basically how the evening went.

Pure and utter awesomeness for me.

You know, Harper might be a jerk, but he's a leader and knows how to get his ducks in a row.

The title of the two books: "Hot Air" and "365 Jours" (365 days in French). Seems appropriate.

Agreed. I mean it's a huge oversight but at the same time so random. I wish Jon Stewart did a Canadian Daily Show because he would have a good time with that.

Anyone remember the time Stockwell Day made a press appearance riding in on a jetski?

This coalition tape thing is just as ridiculous.

No kidding ... it finishes my trifecta of favourite politician yucks. The Stockwell Day bidet is one as well, and This Hour's petition to change Stockwell Day's name to Doris Day is the other.
