Is this true for a lot of people? Or is it true for people who were actually in junior high when the show started? I know I would have watched it. It wouldn't have been a question of "allowed" or "disallowed". It was on cable, we had cable, I would have just watched it if I wanted to.
|
My junior high days were the early seventies. Back then there was maybe six channels on cable and most houses had one television, in the living room. Mom and Dad ruled the remote control. Most of the content was pretty tame stuff but my point was that my parents actually took note of what was on. I'm sure if I really wanted to, I could have chosen to visit the homes of friends whose parents didn't care what was on TV, but other than sports, I didn't watch much TV then.
I am not blaming South Park for this stupidity, which was probably bullies using an internet campaign as an excuse for doing what bullies do. I like the show. It was more of a blanket condemnation of parents who don't give a crap. A lot of those parents are from my generation, and they are seriously dropping the ball. When kids have a lack of parental guidance, they tend to take their cues from their peers and pop culture. That makes for some seriously screwed up people lacking morality and self control.

I am actually most surprised (appalled) that someone at SAIT would go along with whatever stupid idea some stupid 15 year old stupid facebook kid came up with. I guess thinking is an old fogey activity.
It makes me so tired.

Okay.
So beating up black kids for being black is very, very wrong because it is racist.
Beating up kids with red hair on the other hand doesn't compare to that because it is not racist and is actually quite funny.
Maybe I'm just completely out of touch. But I think kids beating up other kids because of a physical trait - ANY physical trait - is very, very wrong and merits not just suspensions for the kids that took part in this, but in strong punishment for the kid that started the Facebook group.

I've been discussing this with a number of my peers in my masters program in education. What do you folk think the role of schools themselves should be in developing the moral character of youth? It's certainly a traditional role of schools.

Ok. Story time...
Back in Rome, my favorite bar was a place called 'Scholar's Lounge'. A cool Irish pub owned by an Irish guy with curly red hair, named Declan. After a few months of hanging out at this place, I became pretty good friends with one of the bartenders, another Irish guy named Declan (or Deckie, as we called him).
One day, I stopped in for a pint and Deckie introduced me to his brother, Ronin, who had dropped in from Ireland to visit his bro. I chilled with Ronin for a few and we waited for Deckie to get off work. Once he did, we headed to Campo di Fiori for a few more pints.
So we're sitting on a patio in Campo and I'm just giggling at their accents, when Ronin starts giving Deckie crap for not taking the night off while he's in town. Deckie replies that he asked for the night off, but Declan wouldn't give it to him.
Ronin spits out "what do you expect, he's a G.D. ginge"
While they're having a little laugh, I'm a bit confused. So I say "a G.D. what?"
"ginge"
"what?"
"GINGE! A G.D. GINGE! WITH THE F'N RED HAIR, THE EVIL BUGGERS".
Woah. I admit I laughed at his hissy fit. It was pretty funny. But what I got out of that conversation is that people hate people for reasons as simple as the colour of their hair.
Lol. Ginge.

To the 'racism' issue:
There are three (3) anthropological races:
Caucasoids (Whites and their ilk)
Negroids AKA Nubians (Blacks)
Mongoloids (Asians)
Everything(one) is an offshoot or hybrid of these three original races
Gingers aren't a race, they are Caucasoids. (Of course, sometimes there are albino Monogoloids or Negroids but we'll ignore that).
Beating up this specific grouping of people is a hate crime, it is bigotry, and it is abohrrant, but it is most certainly not racism.
Please stop using racism to condemn actions not performed against a race.
On the South Park issue:
This episode is 3 seasons old. It has no 'kick a ginger day', and the episode basically culminates with gingers forming a 'kill everyone else' society, under the guidance of Cartman who thinks he's a ginger due to some hair dye and clever makeup (unbeknownest to him).
On top of this, the term 'Ginger' has been around for way longer than anyone would believe, just because South Park made it 'in vogue' amongst young people does not (and should not) make them the scapegoat.
Summarily, this was a crime of idiocy and bad parenting. There is no personal responsibility anymore (or responsibility over minors). It will eventually turn into a lawsuit against Matt Parker and Trey Stone and they might even win too, because god forbid someone responsible takes the blame.

"Punishment, like the SP episode, should be to turn all of the guilty into Jews, so they can live the hellish life that being Jews is. "
"The people that kick Jews deserve to be punched. Funny idea though."
"Ok so apparently it was yesterday. My crappy computer at work doesn't load the page properly though so I can't see the edit button. Either way hilarious."
"Only a few ######s took this too far. I am sure very few people are racist or hate Jews genuinely. There are just a few aholes who found it was a good excuse to beat the crap out of other kids.
I can't believe anyone actually thinks that red heads, Irish or South park are serious issues here. Irish people are not being discriminated against.
This is just a really funny joke that a bunch of morons took way too far. I am sure a bunch of Jews were really traumatized a few days ago but I hardly think that I'd ever compare it to kick a black day. This thing is supposed to be funny, not racist.
Am I the only one who is disappointed they didn't know about this day and was unable to kick a Jew??
"it's a well know fact that Jews are crazy, demon spawn that need to be locked up with the gimp."
Those are some of the comments on this board regarding Kick a Ginger day, I am just wondering if it is as funny for those who see the humour when you substitute Jew for Ginger??

Being Jewish, i found your post to be the funniest thing in the thread.
As stated above, Jews aren't a race.

I think Matt and Trey have made a living off the "blame bad parenting" vs "blame a cartoon" theme. I think they might welcome a few law suits just to give them more fodder for the show, which many are surprised to find still in production....

Do you even know how to read or did you just pick my post at random.
Did I not say that all the ######bags who took this too far should be punished? This could've been an innocent prank but people used it to hurt and beat up gingers, who didn't deserve it.
Next time don't spew your garbage until you actually take a post in context.
1) Learn how to have a sense of humour.
2) Learn how to read a post that condemns the actions of these morons who ruined what could've been a great joke. Just like all the jerks who ruined froshing in High School by taking it too far.

Ahh I see.
Emotion in context is so hard to read in just text. I thought you were either making a joke or saying that all gingers should be angry because "kick a ginger day" is so offensive they should all be up in arms.
