affect is it...
but whoever said impact... I'd go with that since people don't have many other words to mix impact up with.

As a verb "effect"=cause while "affect" = influence.

Yeah so I still think KG can use effect. The someone he is writing to can cause positive change, that is the point.
If they're just affecting positive change, then they're really not effecting it.

Go to askoxford.com for uses of effect as both a noun and a verb in the same sentence. Or ask Locke! He seems to be quite the linguist.

but KG is looking to positively INFLUENCE the situation, I don't think he's looking to cause change... or the situation.

That is exactly right, if that is what words he was using. The thing is, yes he wants to effect positive change. But the sentance isn't written like that. You cant read the sentance, take the meaning and then try to pick the word that fits.
It has to be affect because the sentance is about altering or changing the situation. If it was written as "blank" positive change to a situation then it would be "effect" as in:
"I am writing to you to tell you how you can stand for change and
positively effect change in this situation.
But it is written as
"I am writing to you to tell you how you can stand for change and
positively affect this situation.
So as you see. The sentance is not "affecting positive change." The sentance is affecting a situation. That is the difference. It is irrelevent what the point of the sentance is, only the context in which it was written. You can not effect a situation. You can affect a situation to create an effect.

Yeah, I don't know. I was always told to use "effect" if I wanted a noun, and "affect" if I wanted verb. Obviously it's not that simple and was dumbed down for me...

Hey, hey, hey. Let's get some things straight. First. I'm female. Second. I'm married. But if that's what everyone wants to think - then go for it. I guess...

I don't know if this has been posted, but...
You can either cause an effect, or you can affect a cause.
(noun, meet verb)

I would use both: "I am writing to you to tell you how you can effect change and positively affect this situation." Then, whoever is reading your missive will say, "This man is a grammar GOD!!!" and do whatever it is you say in the rest of your message like a hypnotized sheep.
