Yeah, I can understand that. I would love to be able to do all those things. I'm sure there is a correlation between time off and the amount of money one makes. I guess that have to make more money so that they can afford to do things when they have their time off!
I guess I was thinking of it from my standpoint. I don't think I could afford to go to europe for any length of time. I was thinking that people who had extended periods of time off stuck around their home city. I guess that is not the case, and I think that would have to be the case for me as well if I had that amount of time off, otherwise, like I said, i'd go crazy without something to do.
That's why I don't like it when people say they wish they would win the lottery so they could do nothing. You could have all the money, but I think you'd run out of things to do after a while. I need something to work towards and to put my effort into. I do that through my job which I enjoy. I guess it also factors in that I like my job and don't mind going to work. Maybe if I hated it i'd take vacation time doing nothing over going into work.

Definitely I'm fortunate to be in the position to travel that much right now. Even if you look at the Fridays I get off though, that's 24 days a year, and you'd be surprised how much you get used to long weekends. You can go skate outdoors when there is barely anyone on the ice. You can use the day to get all your errands done so the weekend is totally yours. So even with no where to go, I think you could burn 5 weeks of holidays pretty easily just making long weekends.

1. I am given three weeks per year.
2. City employee
3. 5 years in
4. City of Edmonton
5. Not possible, union contract
6. Edmonton
We can bank our OT, and then use that time to take additional days off. For example, I took 6 weeks of time off last year by combining by vacation and overtime hours.

7 - Yes, I'm not sure what a flex day is but I do get personal days, paid sick days, etc.

Starting with this year, I earn 4 weeks per year. I also earn extra annual leave (that's what the post office calls it) for OT hours worked. So I will end up with 5+ weeks earned in '08 for use after Jan 1, 09. Add that to the 2 weeks I'm carrying over and I will finally, for the first time in my life, have more vacation time than I know what to do with!
Looking at spending 3, count 'em!, 3 wonderful weeks in the Flathead next July!
To answer the questions specifically,......
1. 4 weeks + more earned for OT which will equate to a little over 1 additional week.
2. United States Postal Service
3. 5 and half years with USPS
4. Employee
5. Negotiate? My union did that for me, at least that's the union's story.
6. Wichita, KS USA
7. We get sick leave too, but they will fire your ass for 'abusing' it. Every day is scrutinized, so I basically have sworn off using it and am saving it for emergency illnesses or injuries. Maybe someday the Feds will let us get paid for the sick leave we don't use like they do some other Federal employees!

1 - how many weeks your getting - 3.5 weeks
2 - Industry - Telecom
3 - Years at current company - 4...ugh!
4 - Employee or Contractor - Employee
5 - did you negotiate for more than standard when interviewing - No
6 - City/Country your in - Victoria, BC
7 - Do you get flex days or personal days, and if so, how many per year? - Honestly with my boss I get whatever I want as long as I do my job.
However I only work 6.5/hr days 5 days a week. I am looking to change career paths as I am tired of the company I am with and don't really like the Telecom industry anymore. Its very opposite of how a business should be run...@&%! the old customers, where are the new ones? seems to be the Telecom attitude which is very sad.

It's not wise to fire the boss's heir apparent to the throne, his son.
But now that we're out in the open, I used to pee in the coffee machine. That wasn't a green tea frappicino you were drinkin' last Thursday!

To be honest I expected many of the Calgary Oil and gass peeps to blow my mind with perks and time off, but really they are not that out of alignment with other industries... seems like I'm doing alright after all... the every second friday off thing sure would be nice... but can't have it all.
Now if we started talking bonuses, I think the O&G folks would kick some butt...
