I've got a strange request, but there seems to be quite a few people on CP that could help me. I'm 21 and beginning my 1st year of engineering in 1 week. If any engineers are comfortable with PM'ing me some job info (ex: field/experience/salary/hours) I'd really appreciate it, but I completely understand if nobody wants to.
Sorry to go off-topic.

You probably want an idea of what to expect when you graduate right? A lot can change in 4 years... not sure how much that info would help you in today's terms in 2012.

Yeah just an idea. I'm well aware things change, but at the moment I really don't know anything, so any info would be nice.
I've got a friend who did 2 years of electrical engineering at college, and just started a job at 23.50/hr. Then another friend who did 4 years of engineering at university, then went on to work in the oilfield I believe, made 100k. That's all I know, and the oilfield doesn't interest me.

Check out the APEGGA salary survey, the results are pretty close to what you can expect. Don't forget to account for inflation.
As for O&G (this is Calgary after all) this year as a new grad you could expect approx. $70,000 or slightly under. In years past new grad (level A) inflation was at about 8% but I think it's already starting to slow down with the economic slow down. Using a new grad inflation of about 4% I would suggest that something in the $80,000 a year range is not out of the realm of possibility for a new grad in 4 years. Bring that number down to as low as $60,000 or less for other industries.
As for hours, expect "8 hours" a day but this apparently varies with each companies flex day/pdo package. From what I've seen you can expect to work 8.5hr days with every second friday off (24 flex/pdo's) or work 8 hr days with 1 flex/pdo a month and everything inbetween. Most offices are essentially close during christmas. Some of which give you the days off while others expect you to use flex/vacation days. Unless of course you want to work over christmas. Finally I know of other companies that use flex days for corporate functions like 2 day spa getaways (on the companies dime of course).
Benefits can also be pretty nice with significant "flex money" to spend on things like orthodics, glasses, massages, etc. Alot of companies also have in house massages/etc.
I'm sure others have alot to add but that is just what i figured out after recently going through the new hire routine...

Haha, oops...
Most of my buddies that took non oil/non operator jobs are making about $50,000 to $55,000 a year with 2 or 3 weeks vacation and less benefits/flex/pdo's. I would guess that $60,000 to $65,000 a year, 3 weeks vacation and basic health/dental is a safe bet?

Wait... what? 70k starting for a just out of school engineer?
Either I went into the wrong field or employers are giving the young'ins far, far too much money for their worth.
I personally would much rather have nearly full benefits, 4 weeks vacation and make 45-50K a year.
Edit:
My Answers:
1) Zero given weeks
2) Software Development
3) 1.5 years total, 6 months in current gig
4) Contractor (on my own)
5) n/a
6) Calgary
I got the opportunity to strike out on my own essentially and now make up my own hours. It can swing between bounty and barren in terms of work so sometimes I get vacation even if I don't want it. Other times, I get swamped in so much work that I can't see straight.
Still... I prefer the flexibility of being an independent contractor to being a corporate minion. At least so far...

4 - Employee or Contractor. - Employee

6 - City/Country your in. - Calgary
7 - Do you get flex days or personal days, and if so, how many per year? - We get banked days from every stat...but no personal days or flex days. And for sick days...unlimited sick days, just need a doctors note after the fourth shift.

2 - Industry. Post Secondary
3 - Years experience and years at current company. 5 years and 5 years
4 - Employee or Contractor. Employee
5 - did you negotiate for more than standard when interviewing. Yes.

The funny thing is we are suppose to work an extra 435 minutes per month to earn the flex but I don't think 1 single person here actually does it. hehe.

I wouldn't even be able to challenge for both for a number of years. Hell, I don't even have 5 years experience under my belt, so going for high pay and lots of vacation is a tad on the presumptuous side I think.
Now if I'm in the same position 10 years down the road... hell yeah I'd be demanding both plus 20 virgins a week.

That thought enters my head on an almost-daily basis.

This is what I keep telling myself at night while slowly in the fetal position trying too sooth worries about not being able to buy a $600,000 condo, a $80,000 gas guzzling pickup while supporting a trophy wife and 3 mistresses.
And a massive hookers and blow habit.
Why the hell didn't I go into Oil and Gas?

It seems to me the standard when starting at a company is 3 weeks. Although most of the people on here seem well educated...I guess the give away is their on a computer during work hours. Not many mechanics and labourers can respond to this thread right now I guess.
I'm happy with my 2 weeks and when it goes up to 3, I don't even know if i'll use it all. Unless you have somewhere to go, sitting around at home is not something I enjoy. It's nice to take some time to read and such, but if I had to stay home for 3 weeks in the summer i'd die of bordem. I'd have to plan a lot of stuff...work on my car...go mountain biking..build a deck...do anything to occupy me. What the hell do you guys with 5 or 6 weeks do for that amount of time?
|
After my next trip, I'll have spent 8 weeks in Europe in the last year. I have so much more of the world to see, and lots of Canada I like to visit every year. I'd do just fine working 2 months a year.

1. 13 days, 3 "special" holiday days (which I used for the birth of my second daughter), plus three for summer holidays, and official New Year's holidays (which usually run from December 28-January 5).
2. Advertising
3. almost 10, three years at current company.
4. Employee
5. Yes. Carried over some holidays from a sister company when I moved over three years ago. Also got three extra days this year.
6. Tokyo, Japan
7. Sort of. Everyone in Japan gets a few days off in the summer, and I negotiated three additional days this year.
