USA finally, finally stuff Mikhailov. On match point no less!

USA wins in 5.

Russia loses Mikhailov gets stuffed to end it. He was set 52 times, more than twice as much as any other Russian. Unfortunately at 14-13 the USA knew exactly where the set was going and shut him down. Too bad. Great match.

As CBC is showing boxing, refreshing the official Beijing site, it looks like Sergrie in Taekwondo won 3-0 and moves to the semis...which start at 3am Calgary time.

AVK = 8th!
Wow. So much for that, and all that hype surrounding him.

Did he just give up to save his energy for his next race?

All that hype and he just faded like nothing in the last half...

Well hopefully he'll come through tomorrow in the 500. Otherwise he'll take home the biggest dissapointment of the games for Canada.

"I've based my whole career on surprising myself and surprising those around me...I guess I've done it again"

Said he just didn't have it, worst 1000m in 6 years.

Huge pressure tomorrow.

AVK has been quoted saying something along the lines of "it doesn't matter what others expectations are of me, no one has higher expectations than myself."

You could really tell that was true in his post race interview. He looked completely distraught and spellbounded. I imagine he'll come out firing tomorrow.

Let's go Hall!

big disappointment from the favorite, but bigger performance from the underdog with Hall taking bronze. seems like this is the year for unheralded Canadian athletes as most of our medals haven't come from the big names. i'm really hoping this is a taste of things to come for 2012 when all these young athletes surpassing expectations will get some experience and come out even stronger in London

Congrats to Hall and Sergerie for winning the silver and bronze respectively. Great effort by both of them!

As for AVK, I have no idea how to explain what happened. The 1,000 is the one he won bronze in the last Olympics. I'm sure he'll step it up in the 500 and atleast win a bronze. He'll bounce back. The main thing is he finished 8th. If he had finished 4th and just out of the medals I could understand but this is strange.

AVK - such a complete shocker. I felt so bad for the guy, you could tell, he had no idea what happened. Hope he can re-group for the 500.
Usually when he races, he is just going for broke the entire race, it just didn't seem like him in that kayak.
Hope it's not the curse of the flag bearer!

Earlier in the week, it struck me that Van Koeverden was placing a large amount of pressure on himself. He took all the expectations of the country, doubled that, and collapsed (choked?) under all that weight. You could see such tremendous disappointment in his eyes after the race.

The worry now is that he'll place even MORE pressure on himself to win the 500m. I hope he can recover okay.

17 medals so far - hey, that's not bad! I think Canada was looking at 16 before the games began.

This should end any doubts that Bolt > Phelps. 3 Golds and 3 World Records. Phelps is still a close 2nd.

as discussed a few days ago I dont think its that easy a discussion either way

obviously you can make all kinds of goodx4 cases for Phelps, but I believe you can for Bolt too

1. WR in the 100 (easily), in the marquee event of the olympics
2. WR in the 200, breaking a 12 year old record
3. WR in the 4x100 for a nation of 3 M people, taking down a 15 year old record set by a team from a nation of 300 M

each guy did the absolute best they could in their circumstance
