Like fanIn80 stating the first 3 minutes of the new song suck...so should the entire 8 minute song be full of speed riffs and shredding? Should entire Metallica albums be full of that?
I'm not a Metallica fan so I'm not trying to defend them or anything, but it seems to me that more than any group of fans, the older Metallica fans just can't accept them straying from their orignal metal sound. Which I find really strange because I tend to favour artists that push into different territory as their career progresses.

I tend to agree with you. The Black album may not have been their strongest "metal" album but it's still a great album on it's own. "Fade to Black" is one of my favourite songs and I usually hate the sad and slow ballads like that.

The first minute and a half I heard things reminiscent of Call of Ktulu, Master of Puppets and One.
The last three mins reminded me of Sad But True and Through the Never, as well as a big step back to the earlier stuff around the 6:30 mark.

The people who think Metallica should never have evolved are the same idiots who would rather the band was the Nickelback of heavy metal. They'd rather buy the same album over and over again with the only difference being a new cover and songs that sound the same as what was on the the album before that. And before that. And before that.

Look, no offense dude... trying to back up liking the Black Album by saying you like Fade to Black is like trying to defend the new Robert Plant/Alison Kraus album, and then saying you know what you're talking about because you also like Stairway to Heaven.

AMEN. I will post more on this tomorrow but it is home time soon. I love Metallica. Every single album (you will note I said album and not that song they wrote for MI:2, that is the one song I don't like) and can happily listen to all of them from beginning to end.
Personally, I see a bigger difference from The Black Album to Load and from Reload to Some Kind of Monster than from Justice to The Black Album.
I am excited to download this for GH and I will be in line to buy the album on the 12th.

If you think that Kill Em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets and Justice for All sound the same, then you're not someone who's opinion matters to me.
...and the first three minutes sounded nothing like Call of Ktulu and everything like Nothing Else Matters. In other words, crap.
The people who think Metallica was just about loud guitars and fast riffs don't understand them at all. They were about symphonies and complex arrangements. You could take any old-school Metallica song and play it in an opera using a local Philharmonic orchestra. THAT was the point to Metallica. THAT was the genre they created.
Any fool can bang on a guitar really loudly, and they turned into that when they released the Black Album.

Wow, I am in love with this single. I became a fan of Metallica in junior high, roughly the LOAD era, and I have loved virtually all of their stuff with the exception of St. Anger. I just can't get myself into that album. This new song is very reminiscent of Justice era music, I absolutely love it!

Yeah, that didn't really make a lot of sense. I do still like some tunes off of the Black album (i.e. Wherever I May Roam, Nothing Else Matters, Sad But True).
EDIT: And what's wrong with "Raising Sand"?

So is this single going to be released today on either Guitar Hero or Rock Band, or do we have to wait for the album to be released on Sept.12 for GHIII?

Man, I hate meeting you "hardcore-ier than thou" "Metallica fans." You're arrogant, stuck up little twerps, so I guess it's a good thing my opinion doesn't matter to you.
Listen to the albums dude. They progressively get slower and heavier, going for thicker guitars and more melodic solos and stepping away from the rapid, all out thrash. Black was the next logical step after Justice. Load and Reload were a new path to be trodden.

Huh? Fade to Black isn't even an album. What are you talking about?
What the hell is Raising Sand? (try to remember Metallica died for me in '91, so if it's some song from one of their albums after '91, I have no clue about what it sounds like - I can promise you it sounds nothing like their real stuff though)
Edit: Oh. I just figured out that Raising Sand is the name of that Robert Plant/Alisson Kraus album. Awesome.

There's no need to get personal here. All I said was that if you think their first 5 albums all sound the same, then your musical opinion means nothing to me.
I commented on your musical perception as a skill. Calling me an arrogant stuck up little twerp was completely uncalled for.
...and, again, Metallica wasn't just about loud guitars and speed riffs. They were about long, complex symphonies and musical arrangements. Listening to an old-school Metallica album is like listening to an opera... just very, very, very heavy. THAT's the Metallica that I would love to hear something new from.
The Black Album marked their departure from that. THAT's what pissed off all their fans.
Edit: Anyway. I'm done with this. This argument has been going on for 17 years. I'm not the only person on the planet that feels this way, either. That's a promise.

Bah, I meant the Black album, just had Fade to Black stuck in my head. I'll go back and edit it. Raising Sand is the new Plant/Krause album. And I do like most of their earlier stuff better (Whiplash, One, and Sanitarium are probably my favorite songs) but I still like the Black album. St. Anger was crap.

Awesome, dude. Acting like a maniac!... Whiplash!
Yeah, St. Anger really pissed me off (irony?). It was supposed to be their "return to their roots" yet it was just a really crappy version of everything they'd done since Justice.

The thing I think that pissed me off the most about it was the crappy lyrics. Every song was just junk. I'll go check out the new single when people leave the office here and I can crank it.

From where I stand, my comments are pretty dead on.
It seems pretty arrogant and stuck up to me to proclaim that everything after Justice isn't Metallicas "real stuff." Like you're the final say in what passes or fails for the bands music; casting judgment on albums you say you've never even heard. Obviously you've either heard them and are just playing it up like you haven't to sound more hardcore about your "oldschool Metallica fandom" or you've chosen to remain ignorant and just leech an opinion off everybody who disliked anything after Justice.
Blanketing everybody who likes Black as some hack bandwagon fan because only "people who would have never been caught dead listening to Metallica before it was released" would like the self titled album.
Saying the Black album pissed off ALL their fans.
Seriously man, you don't speak for all fans, you don't speak for the band, you're just some dude who likes a few Metallica album. Realize that and drop the chip you've been carrying around on your shoulder for the last 15 years because some feeling of betrayal by a band who owes you nothing.

Well the thing too is that not every Metallica fan was around when they first came out. I was born in 1986, three years after Kill 'Em All was released. Technically I didn't even start listening to Metallica until probably around 2001. Enter Sandman was the first Metallica song I ever heard on the radio and it got me interested in them. Does that make me a bandwagon fan?

Seems like according to some of the hardcore oldschool fans it would.
I was only 4 when Kill 'Em All came out and Puppets was the first Metallica album I heard, sitting in the basement at my buddies house when I was about 10 or 11. I remember the shivers I got the first time I heard "Master, Master, where's the dreams that I've been after?" I loved what I heard and listened to more, liked everything that was released before and everything after, with the exception of St. Anger. Don't much like that one except a few songs.

I didn't say it pissed off all their fans. I said it pissed off "millions of their fans."
I'm sure there were 5 or 6 of their fans somewhere that liked it.
...and for the record, I don't care when people started listening to Metallica. I started listening to them in '83. Does that win me a medal? Probably not. My beef has never been about the fans. Like whatever you want to like, I honestly couldn't care less.
There are two very different versions of Metallica, and I happen to like the earlier version.
Discussion over.

Count me in the "meh" category for the new single. Starts to pick up around 5:30 but overall it's pretty boring.
