Not the station with Kelly Hrudey.

Prime example, it took me more than 8 months to book Cal Ripken Jr. You just have to be persistent. You of course run into absolute ######bags who represent the player/actor/personality. I have been trying for three years to get Doug Flutie on the show. It shouldn't be that hard. But every time I call his agent, she tells me, "sure, we can make that work, just send me an email and we can work it out.".....I send the email, nothing. I call back and we do the same routine. I call her once every two-three months and every time she acts like it's the first time we have spoken. For the record I have tried other avenues to no avail. It sucks, because if I had somehow tracked down Doug's number, he probably would do the interview, no problem and I know this because one of our hosts met him and he said he would be happy to do it, but told us to set it up thru the agent.

There are instances like the Williams Shatner interview, where the only reason we got him was because he was promoting something, so the PR people that our representing the company will call us and ask if we would like him on the show to which I replied, Hell Yes.
i remember Shatner, it was a Vegas promotion. I think Alan Thicke did the same thing too.

which show do you work for on 1040? the morning show? I think those guys are so much better than Calgary's show, its not even close.

Well considering I produce the morning show, I am a little biased. But each show has its pros and cons. Each show is different, the morning show is more sports, and when I say that I mean more than just hockey talk, the guys(Bmac and Rintoul) are very knowledgable in most sports, especially Bmac in baseball and Rintoul in football. Pratt and Taylor talk sports, but where they succeed is in the "guy talk" aspect. They can blab about anything and make it sound entertaining. It's just like 2 guys talking at the bar. No guy with the radio voice, talking hard hitting sports for 4 hours. That would be annoying.

I don't listen to Fan 960 much, but I definitely don't hate what I hear. I think there are good things to Richards show, but at the same time, some of his schtick can get played out. Kerr is solid IMO. You may not like what he says, but that doesn't make it bad radio. If anything it makes it good. If a radio host is getting you to totally agree or vehemently disagree, then I believe and from I have learned, that they are doing their job.

And the Shatner interview, yeah, it was for a Vegas promotion and it was quite funny, because the guys were trying to talk Star Trek, Boston Legal, but he wanted to rant and rave about how good a deal this Vegas thing was. It was hilarious. Shameless Shatner.

A lot of this has to do with how much the station is willing to give their regulars and whether or not they can sell the interview to sponsors.

great morning show! i love the "anything but" feature and those two guys really are funny. unlike Richards and Kirkwood who have to try so hard to be funny, Bmac and Rintoul just are funny with the way the interact.

Anyhow, this thread is officially diverted. Calgary's show would improve if the the morning guys were more sports focused and less comedy. But thats me, i guess enough people like it the way it is.

Ah, yeah, I've heard some great interviews with Negreanu, so if this was a disaster, you can probably put the blame in two places, the early timing of it, and idiotic tripe from the 'Dynamic Duo'. To be fair to Kirkwood, I think his involvement in the station is more meant to be a producer or something for Richards' show, but I cringe every time he's talking, making his stupid noises/voices. I found Richards' show really funny for the first while I listened to it, but now, either I'm getting tired of it, or the quality is going down.

The afternoon stuff on the Fan is far better than the morning stuff, in my opinion.

It's a very fair question, but it's a pretty easy answer for sports radio. We have guests like Hrudey, McGuire, McKenzie etc to talk hockey, but the demographic that our station targets Men 18-54, like other stuff. Movies, music, gambling, stuff like that. Hence the reason we have different guests on. In the three years that I have been producing the morning show, we have had plenty of guests that are non sports related like Bob Saget, Cheech Marin, William Shatner and recently we had Verne Troyer aka Mini Me. These guests have nothing to do with sports, but they are some of the more memorable interviews on our station. It works when they happen every once in awhile, as a complete 180 from what we usually talk about. This is also a reason why many of sports shows turn out to be "guy talk" as well. It's sport talk mixed in with movies, hotties, music talk as well and based on listener surveys, that's what the listeners want.

As far as Negreanu, we had him on our show about 3 months ago and he was fantastic. We even put him into our "best of" show. He lives a very interesting life and he shared it in the interview. Very good piece. And contrary to another poster in this thread, there are very few times where the interviewee preps for the interview. They know the jist as to why they are on, but they never ask for pre-interview questions or anything like that.
This is a very good point. Any sports radio show should not be exclusively about sports but about all things sports-people like. Which is pretty much what men like. Sports, movies, music, cars, women etc One of the best interviews you can get are actors and singers talking about their sports experiences.

This goes way back but do any of you remember when ESPN Allnight was hosted by Todd Wright? I would listen to this show while trying to fall asleep. He would talk about sports but would regularily interview actors and actresses and models and ask them about their favorite teams. My favorite regular was Carlos Bernard(24) being a HUGE Cubs fan. The guy who hosts Allnight now is terrible and babbles about the same things over and over so I hardly listen to the show anymore.

I don't listen to the Richards show anymore because it's so unprofessional and I agree that Kirkwood offers nothing.

Pierre McGuire has a spot on the FAN, or at least he did during hockey season. I am a big fan of Steven Brunt. I really enjoy his input.

I guess they're lucky it was a phone interview and that they weren't standing beside a swimming pool (language warning)...

That interviewer should be fired. It would be like some guy interviewing Iginla during a scoring slump and trying to relate to him because of a slump he had in junior hockey. The interviewer lost it when Daniel called him on it.

Yeah, that could be the worst interview ever... is it even real?
It was pretty damn funny though.

I would really like to know if that's real. I'm gonna go with no. I just don't see Daniel pushing the guy in pool like that. I just can't see it. Funny as hell though.

According to Richards, they woke Daniel up and then tried to reschedule because it was obvious he wasn't prepared to do the interview. Daniel said no, let's do it anyway. It was a horrible interview. As others have said, Richards has done good interviews in the past so I don't think you can put it all on him. If you know the guy isn't really interested in talking to you, I'm sure it is tough to make it seem reasonable. On top of that, Daniel really did come off as an arrogant ass. He didn't know about the contest, gave one word responses, said "I have an assistant who looks after these things" and generally sounded like a tool.

Richards is completely correct to make fun of him for it.

And yes, Pierre McGuire has a regular spot on Wednesday's during the hockey season, as does Adam Proteau (Hockey News guy who is also good). During football season they have Khari Jones and Chris Schultz both on once each week. You might not always like their humour (and I don't really), but they do get quality guests.

It's definitely a joke. I think the biggest give away are that lame little push and the Doyle Brunson comment. Also, I doubt any interviewer would be that stupid...

I am not a huge Pierre McGuire fan on TSN but I really like his spot on the radio. Maybe it is because he talk with less emotion on the phone and say 'monster' less. To me he sounds much more intelligent and I make an effort to listen when he is on.

I find it funny that DN didn't really have any comments about hockey and that he isn't really a Leafs fan since he wears a Leafs jersey a lot of the time.

Proteau is pretty weak on the air IMO, kinda soft spoken and doesn't really give anything different. No edge to him, just kind of vanilla.

Do you remember the Mc-Lovin Interview with the Movie guy?

My favorite interview I have ever heard. Kid has a dirty mouth for live radio?

Yep, that was a claasic. Did you ever hear Mr Showbiz's interview with Super Dave?? Now that was classic. Not because Super Dave had anything special to say, but because Mr Showbiz was so un prepared and Super Dave totally called him out on it and just ripped him. It's a must listen.
