He was probably the weakest inteview I have ever heard.
I think he mentioned that he never gets up before noon and you could tell.
One word replies to everything, it was like pulling teeth with every question.

Yeah, and he yawned at the end of the interview quite loudly too. It was pretty funny.

Usually most interviewee's have the courtesy in being prepared for telephone interviews. Negreanu was not. He indicated that he had just woken up.
Then when he's asked to elaborate on a cool technique that he did, it wasn't interesting or special. Then there's not being able to properly promote an event by the guys who pay his paychecks, (party poker) by not really hyping that yes the winners will be staying in a mansion etc etc. "I don't know" in relation to being a spokesperson followed up with I don't care is termination of services territory for some folks.
Guy sounded wasted.

I was actually going to post this when I heard it a couple days ago.
Just awful. Quite possibly the worst, most awkward interview you could have on an early morning sports talk radio show, from both sides. Richards dissed Negreanu quite a bit before and afterwards, and deservedly so, but some of the questions he asked were terrible. But DN really does come off like a pompous assholio during this.

Why do the sports channels and stations have so much poker on? I do get it -- ratings and all that and some people are interested in it, but it isn't "sport". I guess there isn't a big enough market or enough material to justify a "card game" channel or radio station.
Anyway, I didn't think the guy was that all bad of an interview. They were trying to draw some Rasputin answer out of him about guessing the cards right and he said it was just luck. That's an honest answer and kind of tough to elaborate on, even if the hack asking you questions wants you to pretend you have x-ray vision.
I'm sure he meets a lot of kiss-asses and sycophants in the "poker world" and he was taking a phone-call from a couple more of them -- no wonder he was bored and yawning.

I heard it, and I didn't think it was all that bad. It wasn't great, but I've heard/seen worse. Andrew Dice Clay on live CNN, I believe it was. Now that's a horrible interview.

I heard the actual interview and Kirkwood asked some of the stupidest questions I have ever heard of a sports media personality.
I don't recall the exchange 100%, so if this is off by a large degree feel free to correct me...
Kirkwood: "Remember that tournament where you got a straight flush, that showed some real skill knowing those cards would come up"
Daniel N: " That was just some crazy luck"
Kirkwood: " But you could tell you were going to win, right?"
Daniel N: " No really, that was just crazy luck"
Daniel didn't do much other than stink up the place either, but I consider the blame to be on both parties.

Thanks for the link. It wasnt as bad as RIchards makes it out to be in the preamble. Maybe DN thought they were bozo's? They are bozo's after all.
Lets take this off topic a bit and talk about the idiot Kirkwood. Seriously, what are his credentials to host a prime time am mornin show? He is so bad, asks dumb questions and hardly even talks about sports. Short of his stupid "sounds", why is he on the show?
I dont think RIchards is much of a sports host either, after having spent a lot of time in Vancouver, Toronto and MOntreal, Calgary is really lacking quality am sports contents.
Vancouver has contributors every morning like Bob McKenzie, Pierre McGuire, Kelly Hrudy (during hockey season of course) as some examples of interesting am radio.

listened to it, seems like the interviewers had no idea about poker at all, they kind of sounded like idiots talking about what mad skill DN had to predict what cards are coming, and he tells them multiple times no that's luck not skill. And Richards goes on and on at the beginning about the Flames getting Bert after DN tried to brush past that with his "nah don't really have a favorite team", "that's not going to help them *yawn*", then Richards goes on and on for like 2 minutes about something. I'd get bored talking to morons too.

Negreanu admits to dogging interviews if he's asked stupid questions. When he isn't being an ass, he's a very entertaining interview.
http://fullcontactpoker.com/
That's his website. He has a blog, a video blog, and a message board (where he does post quite frequently). Really nice guy who understands poker (all forms not just Texas Hold 'em) better than almost anyone.

I work for TEAM 1040 in Vancouver. I hear this question asked a lot, why do we have interviews or content that isn't sports related. It's a very fair question, but it's a pretty easy answer for sports radio. We have guests like Hrudey, McGuire, McKenzie etc to talk hockey, but the demographic that our station targets Men 18-54, like other stuff. Movies, music, gambling, stuff like that. Hence the reason we have different guests on. In the three years that I have been producing the morning show, we have had plenty of guests that are non sports related like Bob Saget, Cheech Marin, William Shatner and recently we had Verne Troyer aka Mini Me. These guests have nothing to do with sports, but they are some of the more memorable interviews on our station. It works when they happen every once in awhile, as a complete 180 from what we usually talk about. This is also a reason why many of sports shows turn out to be "guy talk" as well. It's sport talk mixed in with movies, hotties, music talk as well and based on listener surveys, that's what the listeners want.
As far as Negreanu, we had him on our show about 3 months ago and he was fantastic. We even put him into our "best of" show. He lives a very interesting life and he shared it in the interview. Very good piece. And contrary to another poster in this thread, there are very few times where the interviewee preps for the interview. They know the jist as to why they are on, but they never ask for pre-interview questions or anything like that.

Not sure, it probably falls on the producer more than anything. I have no idea who the Fan 960 puts in charge of booking guests, whether it;s the producer or if it's the hosts or what have you. I'm not sure how they work, but it's all a matter or sticking with it. Some guests, it literally takes months of emails and calls to book someone big. Prime example, it took me more than 8 months to book Cal Ripken Jr. You just have to be persistent. You of course run into absolute ######bags who represent the player/actor/personality. I have been trying for three years to get Doug Flutie on the show. It shouldn't be that hard. But every time I call his agent, she tells me, "sure, we can make that work, just send me an email and we can work it out.".....I send the email, nothing. I call back and we do the same routine. I call her once every two-three months and every time she acts like it's the first time we have spoken. For the record I have tried other avenues to no avail. It sucks, because if I had somehow tracked down Doug's number, he probably would do the interview, no problem and I know this because one of our hosts met him and he said he would be happy to do it, but told us to set it up thru the agent.
There are instances like the Williams Shatner interview, where the only reason we got him was because he was promoting something, so the PR people that our representing the company will call us and ask if we would like him on the show to which I replied, Hell Yes.

Hey, thanks for the explanation. I can't argue with that.
I think I just bitch because I don't like poker and I'm truly mystified by the fascination some people have with it.

From my understanding Kirkwood was Richard's 'comedy buddy' helps producing some of the clips... but whats weird they seem to be playing alot of old ones... and even the new ones they re-hash the same Dave Chappelle ripoff of the Rick James sketch, hilarious when Chapelle did it, mildly amusing the first time fan960 did it, and annoying when they do it over and over again.
Richards has done top notch interviews, maybe you don't listen that early in the morning, but I heard one with John Madden's old play by play guy, Pat Summerall. It was weird cause usually you expect Richards to say something dumb, but you could really tell he respected the guy and was interested in what he was saying... Summerall played college and pro football in the 50's before being a well recognized play by play man.
It seems Richards is hit and miss with his interviews, if he knows he can fool around a bit on the air , maybe it detracts a bit from the actual interview.
I read somewhere here at CP that Richards was very un-interested at the Flames Poker Tourny , and has said on air he isn;t into the cards... which is weird since he is such a gambler... maybe this was one of the interviews he could care less about.

Fair enough, I personally am over my poker phase. I used to play 4-5 times a week, now I'm lucky if I play more than 4-5 times within the year. It got really boring for me.

Ouch, that was a pretty bad interview from a guy who is supposed to be one of pokers best ambassadors.
Yeah the questions/comments posed at the end were kinda dumb, and I could see how they might upset Daniel, but I think Dan had done the damage before that and by then Richards and Kirkwood didn't really care about exploring what he was trying to say further.

the issue isnt the guests, you are right i have heard some decent interviews .. irs more along the lines of the regular controbutors.
Calgary has Alan Maki, Scott Taylor and Steven Brunt. Vancouver has Bob McKenzie, Pierre McGuire and Kelly Hrudey. Who do you think has more interesting input?
